Newport, RI--(5/6/07)--Coast Guard Academy cadets sailed the J-44 Glory across the finish line of the 2007 Annapolis-Newport Race Monday morning through the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry to win the IRC Class II division. The cadets’ handicap-corrected time placed them 6th of 18 among all IRC-scored boats and second among the five service academy entries. Since its first entry in the 1951 race, the only other Coast Guard Academy yacht to win a division was the Nelson-Marek 41 Rampage in 1997.

Sailing - Bears 10th at Coast Guard Alumni Bowl, NE Dinghy Champs
New London, CT--(5/7/07)--The Coast Guard Academy sailing team finished 10th out of 18 schools this past weekend at the United States Coast Guard Alumni Bowl for the New England Dinghy Championship. All the top teams from New England were present, vying for the top four spots, which would receive berths to the ISCA National Championship hosted by the Naval Academy. Although the competition was close for most of the championship, with almost anyone in the top 10 having a chance to qualify, the Bears were unable to slip into one of the top four spots. The regatta was a great farewell to the team's seniors who got to sail their last collegiate regatta on home waters.

In A-Division, Rob Gorman '07 and Kyra Chin '07 finished 11th with 120 points. In B-Division, Noel Shriner '08, Emily Kehrt '09, and Andrew Gibbons '07 finished 8th with 109 points. Overall, the team finished 10th with 229 points.
