Brad Milliken and Matt Stroebel were part of the winning team at the RI State Championship. NEWPORT, RI--(11/7/11)--The Sailing Team finished off their regular season in winning fashion this past weekend by taking home the Rhode Island State Championship hosted by Salve Regina University. The regatta, which is a championship for Rhode Island schools but open to all New England teams, is historically one of the toughest conference majors of the season due to its position the schedule. This is the Bears' first time winning the regatta - they were 2nd in 2008.
The sailors were provided with beautiful racing conditions throughout the weekend, which allowed the race committee to run 12 races per division. On Saturday a strong Northerly at around 15 knots began the day, which eventually dimished to about 5 knots for the last race. On Sunday the sea breeze began to pump in around 10:30 and built to 20 knots by the end of the day. |

Will Howard and Jaimie Chicoine were 8th in B-Division at the Schell Trophy. CAMBRIDGE, MA--(11/2/11)--The Sailing Team finished 10th out of 18 teams at the Schell Trophy hosted by MIT this past weekend. The Schell Trophy not only serves as the New England Fall Championship, it is also where teams can earn berths to the Atlantic Coast Championship (top 7) and Atlantic Coast Tournament (8-15).
With the season's first Nor'Easter approaching, Saturday was a cold and rainy day on the Charles River. Races were sailed in northeasterly breeze that ranged from 5 to 20 knots with the river's typical unpredictable shifts. Twelve races per division were completed, leaving sailors tired after a long day on the water. On Sunday, sailors were greeted with snow in their boats but sunshine in the forecast. A northwesterly at 5 to 15 knots provided more excitment for the remaining six races per division. |

NIANTIC, CT--(10/10/11)--In his first appearance at the New England Men's Singlehanded Championship, freshman Dylan Finneran finished 10th in a very competitive field of 22 of the best singlehanded sailors in the country. The event, which is the New England qualifier for the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship, was hosted by Yale out of Niantic Bay Yacht Club. Although Finneran did not grab one of the four berths to Nationals, he was in constantly in the fight and gained valuable experience for his next three attempts.
"It was the toughest regatta that I've ever sailed," commented Finneran following competition on Sunday. "Everyone is so fast and talented that if you make a single mistake you risk losing to the entire fleet."
Finneran had 7 races of 16 in the top-10 and two 2nd place finishes throughout the weekend. He finished 10th with 179 points. Cam Cullman from Yale slaughtered the competition, winning with 60 points and a 58 point lead over Colin Smith from Brown who finished with 118.
