Annapolis, MD--(10/25/09)--This past weekend, the Coast Guard Academy Offshore Sailing Team traveled to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD to defend their 2008 victory at the McMillan Cup. The McMillan Cup, which is the oldest collegiate sailing event, is sailed in Navy 44s on the Chesapeake Bay. In 2008, Coast Guard and Navy finished tied after a very closely contested three-race series, with Coast Guard winning the tie breaker and the regatta. Although the Bears were defending champs, they went into the 2009 event knowing they had a huge challenge ahead.

Saturday brought strong breeze ranging from 15-22 knots. The Bears got of to an early lead, winning race 1 with NY Maritime in 2nd and St. Mary’s in 3rd. In the second race, the Bears got snagged up on a sail change during a downwind leg, which left them trying to go upwind with no headsail on the ensuing leg. The mistake cost them several places in the race and they crossed the line in 9th. However, the Bears managed to regroup for the final two races of the day, winning them both, which once again proved that they were the team to beat.

Jenn Proctor and Margaret Woodbridge sailing A Division for the Bears
Boston, MA--(10/4/09)--Jenn Proctor ’11 kept her streak of top-3 finishes alive this weekend, finishing third in A Division and overall at the Women's Regis Bowl hosted by Boston University. Driving rain was the theme of the day on Saturday as the sailors completed ten races in a shifty Northeasterly breeze. On Sunday, only two races were able to be sailed in a very light and unpredictable Southwesterly. Proctor, sailing with Margaret Woodbridge ’10, finished in the top-5 seven out of the twelve races and finished with 63 points. In B-Division, Ellen Kintz ’13 and Elise Maher ’11 finished eight with 169 points. The team combined for sixth place overall out of ten teams with 232 points. Boston College won the regatta with Harvard and Tufts finishing second and third.

The Coed Team struggled on their home waters at the Danmark Trophy hosted by Coast Guard, which is traditionally one of the toughest intersectionals of the fall season. Jon Duffet ’11 and Tanya Cuprak ’11 finished 13th in A Division with 178 points. In B-Division, Sam Ingham ’11 with crews Chris Grabe ’10 and Amanda Hamlet ’12 finished 17th with 184 points. The total combined score for the team was 362 points which put the Bears in 16th place. Yale handedly won the regatta, finishing 36 points of second place Boston College. Georgetown finished third.

Ian Oviatt and Amanda Hamlet on their way to an A Division win at the Loder Trophy.
Durham, NH--(9/27/09)--Going into Sunday at the Chris Loder Trophy hosted by the University of New Hampshire, only two points stood in the way of the Coast Guard Academy Bears taking the overall regatta win. Unfortunately, the wind didn't cooperate. The race committee was unable to get a single race started on Sunday, due to lack of breeze. Despite not being able to compete for the win on Sunday, the Bears sailed exceptionally well on Saturday and finished second overall out of 17 teams. Ian Oviatt ’10 and Amanda Hamlet ’13 won a very tight A Division with 16 points. Jenn Proctor ’11 and Tanya Cuprak ’11 finished second in every race of the regatta which put them second in B Division with eight points. Only Dartmouth was able to beat the Bears, winning the regatta with 22 points to the Bears’ 24. Boston University finished third with 40 points.
