Intercollegiate Sailing - Ingham and Hamlet Win A-Division at New London Invitational

Sam Ingham and Amanda Hamlet won A-Division by 8 points.
New London, CT--(4/11/10)--Coast Guard hosted the first New London Invitational this past weekend, an event that attracted fifteen other teams from New England. Everyone in attendance was treated to beautiful racing conditions throughout the weekend, allowing the race committee to complete thirty six races. Both 420s and FJs were used to get everyone on the water at the same time. Coast Guard had a total of four teams competing in the regatta, the top of which finished 3rd overall due to a victory in A-Division by Sam Ingham '11 and Amanda Hamlet '12. The duo finished in the top-5 in 14 out of their 18 races, with four race wins. They finished with 68 points to win the division. Their teammates in B-Division, William Cotta '11 and Kristen Holloway '12, also sailed a great regatta. They posted several top-5 finishes and finished with 123 points, good enough for 6th in their division. The team combined for 191 points and finished 3rd overall. Dartmouth took the first two places in the regatta, the winning team with 150 points and the 2nd place team with 152 points.

Offshore Sailing - Kings Point Cup
Kings Point, NY--(4/4/10)--As reported by 4/c Ben Williamsz : The Coast Guard finished very well this weekend at the King’s Point Cup Regatta hosted by the Merchant Marine Academy, with 8 total wins and only 5 losses. Although final scores have yet to be calculated, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine were very close in almost every one of the 18 matches sailed, often finishing less than a boat length apart.

Intercollegiate Sailing - Southern New England Team Race

New London, CT--(4/4/10)--Coast Guard, along with Connecticut College, played host of the biggest and most competitive team race of the spring season, the Southern New England Team Race. On Saturday, the field of sixteem teams were seeded and sent to either venue for a qualification round robin. The qualifying round determined which teams would sail at in the gold fleet or silver fleet for the rest of the regatta. In the qualifying round, Coast Guard posted a 3-4 record which left them 5th and just one spot shy of making it to the gold fleet. In one of their best qualifying rounds in several years, the Bears lost a few races right at the finish line that would have pushed them into the gold.

Intercollegiate Sailing - Bears Finish 7th at the Closely Contested Szambecki Team Race
ImageNorfolk, VA--(3/28/10)--Coast Guard finished the weekend at the Aaron Szambecki Team Race hosted by Old Dominion University with 9 wins and 12 losses, good enough for 7th place. During the three round robins over the course of the weekend, the Bears posted wins against every school in the eight-team field, with the exception of regatta winner St. Mary's. Several races came down to the wire and most teams found themselves separated by only a win or two at the end of the event.

St. Mary's won the regatta with a 17-4 record. Roger Williams was 2nd (12-9) and Georgetown as third (11-10). Coast Guard was only two wins away from finishing in the top three. Sailing for the Bears was Ian Oviatt '10, Sam Ingham '11, Jon Duffet '11, Kirstin Haas '10, Tanya Cuprak '11, and Amanda Hamlet '12.
