Intercollegiate Sailing - Season Ends with Promise for the Future
Boston, MA--(4/23/12)--The Sailing Team recently completed their championship season, finishing 15th out of 17 at the New England Dinghy Championship for the Coast Guard Alumni Bowl and 14th at the Women’s New England Championship for the Reed Trophy. Although the Bears were unable to qualify for either of the National Championships, the young team gained invaluable experience by being able to sail in such high level events. In the notoriously competitive New England Conference, learning how to sail a championship this early in their career bodes well for the future of the team.

At the New England Dinghy Championship, hosted by Harvard University on April 14-15, the Charles River was its usual self with variable and unpredictable conditions that made for very tight racing and close scores. In A-Division, Brad Milliken (’14), Kristen Holloway (’12), Amanda Hamlet (’12), and Matt Stroebel (’12) finished 16th with 235 points. Dylan Finneran (’15) and Jaimie Chicoine (’14) finished 14th in B-Division with 246 points.

Devon Rohde and Justine Morrison (boat 6) lead a large pack at the St. Francis YC Interconference.
San Francisco, CA--(4/1/11)--The Sailing Team finished strong on day 2 of the St. Francis Yacht Club Interconference Regatta, sealing a 3rd place finish for the coed team and an 8th place finish overall for the women’s team which was also 1st in the women’s fleet. The event, which was co-hosted by Stanford University and St. Francis Yacht Club, brought together some of the best talent from the West Coast, along with the team from Coast Guard who had the one East Coast berth. In a stray from the norm, the women’s and coed fleet were sailed together which made for a much larger fleet than normal with 31 boats on the starting line.

The regatta started on Saturday with rain and wind sustained around 20 and gusting into the 30s. The Bears got off to a rough start in both divisions as they got used to the puffy breeze and strong current that San Francisco is known for. They quickly adapted to the conditions, however, and by the end of the day the coed team was in 5th with the women’s team in 11th.

Brad Milliken and Amanda Hamlet were 5th in A-Division at the Owen Trophy.
NEW HAVEN, CT--(3/25/12)--The Sailing Team finished 5th out of 15 at the Owen, Mosbacher, and Knapp Trophies hosted by Yale University this past weekend. This prestigious regatta is the “Old Guard” – meaning the founding members of college sailing – and military academy’s annual contest to celebrate the traditions of the sport and its beginnings. The Bears sailed well, earning a spot in the top-5 and finishing first amongst military academies.

On Saturday, the event started with a strong 12-18 knot Southeasterly that provided big waves in Yale’s open water venue. The team got off to a strong start and quickly established themselves as one of the teams to beat with several finishes in the top-5. Once the breeze started to diminish, the team really started to get in sync, posting multiple top-3 finishes and a race win.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL--(3/4/12)--The Sailing Team dominated in windy conditions at the Eckerd Intersectional, hosted by Eckerd College, and took home their first victory of the season. Both divisions sailed extremely consistently in challenging conditions, which quickly propelled the Bears to the top of the leader board. This is the first time Coast Guard has won an inter-conference regatta in at least five years, a huge accomplishment for the young team.

On Saturday, racing started in 10-15 knots of breeze out of the South that slowly increased to 20-30 with big waves. The Bears started strong in the lighter breeze, finishing no race outside of the top-6, but really started to turn on the heat as the wind speeds increased.
