Women's Crew - Bears Post Pair of Wins on the Housatonic
ImageSHELTON, CONN.--(10/9/11)--Both the Varsity Women’s Eight and Varsity Women’s Four produced excellent race results this past weekend at the Head of the Housatonic Regatta.

Placing first in each of their events, Collegiate Women’s Eight Non-DI and Collegiate Women’s Four Non-DI, the Bears exceeded expectations for the first full length race of their season.

Coxswain Julianna Harvin led the eight to an 11 second victory over the second place crew, posting a time competitive even in the DI event.

Competing for CGA’s top boat is co-captain Holly Madden, Sarah Jane Otey, Jess Ward, Erin Nolan, Brynna Cooke, Tiffany Zehnle, co-captain Kelli Normoyle, and Rachel Thomas.

Coxswain Jamie Wright pushed the four into first place early on in their race. This crew showed a tremendous amount of focus and determination at the Housatonic.

Racing for CGA was Cathy Durand, Lena Ludewig, Emily BalingitClark, and Tahnee Zaccano.

The Bears focus their training on the next race of the season, the Head of the Charles in Boston, Mass. on Oct. 22nd.
 
Hargis to Be Inducted into CGA Athletics Hall of Fame

Former head coach and Director of Rowing, Steve Hargis, will be inducted into the CGA Hall of Fame later this month.
NEW LONDON, CONN.—-(9/6/11)--Steve Hargis, former Director of Rowing and head coach of the women’s program will be inducted into the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Hall of Fame on Thursday, Sept. 22nd to kickoff Homecoming Weekend.

Hargis, Class of ’80, was the women’s head coach from 1999-2008, Director of Rowing (1999-2009) and served as the technical coach in the program last year.

During his time as head coach, Hargis made five out of six NCAA DIII appearances, won two NEWMAC conference championships (2007 and 2008), and produced three DIII First-Boat All Americans. He was honored as NEWMAC Coach of the Year in both 2003 and 2007, as well as DIII National Coach of the Year in 2003. In 2008, the Bears became the first at-large boat to make the Grand Final at the NCAA Championship.

Women's Crew - Otey Named All-American; Trio Honored for Academics

Sarah Jane Otey earned All-America and National Scholar Athlete honors.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/24/11)--Junior Sarah Jane Otey has been named a first team All-American by The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) an award that recognizes the outstanding performances of rowers and coxswains at NCAA Division III institutions. Otey and pair of teammates were also named CRCA National Scholar Athletes.

She becomes the first Coast Guard first team All-American since 2008 when Adriana Knies was honored.

Otey, who was earlier named a 2011 ESPN Academic All-District I Women’s At Large first team selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), junior Rachel Thomas, and sophomore Jessica Ward were named Division III National Scholar Athletes by the CRCA.

A Marine and Environmental Science major, Otey has a 3.95 GPA, tops in the class. Thomas is a Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering major while Ward is a Mechanical Engineering major.

Women's Crew - Otey Named to Academic All-District Team

Sarah Jane Otey earned Academic first team All-District honors.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/23/11)--Junior Sarah Jane Otey, a member of the women’s crew team, was named to the 2011 ESPN Academic All-District I Women’s At Large first team in voting by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Otey is a three-time New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-conference selection and a member of the Varsity 8 which finished second at the NEWMAC Championships, less than one second off the winning time.

She has the highest GPA in the junior class with a 3.95 GPA as a Marine and Environmental Sciences major. Otey volunteered in Peru for six months in a clinic and teaching Spanish, and then in Ecuador for two months, working with sea turtle nest protection and then in a cloud forest reserve last year. She is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta (freshman honors society) and is a Big sister" for Big Brothers/Big Sisters and she is in charge of organizing that program with all cadets at the Academy.
