Women's Crew - Bears Going Back to NCAA Championships
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/13/08)--For the fifth time in the last six years, the United States Coast Guard Academy Women’s Varsity Eight has been selected to compete in the NCAA Division III Women’s Rowing Championships which will be held May 30 through June 1 at Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, California. The University of California, Berkeley, will serve as host.

The championships are comprised of seven teams and each team is required to field two boats of eight rowers and a coxswain. In addition to the teams, two at-large Eights are also selected. The schools represented by teams this year include Williams, Bates, Ithaca, Puget Sound, Trinity (Connecticut), St. Lawrence and William Smith. The at-large eights are the Coast Guard Academy and Washington (Maryland).

The Bears return to the NCAA Championships for the second straight season earning three straight berths in 2003, 2004 and 2005. In 2003, the Bears Varsity Eight captured the bronze and the team brought home the NCAA 4th place finish team trophy. In 2004 and 2005 the Bears finished 5th and 8th respectively. Last season the Varsity Eight also placed eighth.

The varsity eight consists of The Varsity 8 was comprised of Tenley Barna (Sr), Adriana Knies (Sr), Maggie Ward (Jr), Emily Holt (Sr), Lauren Milici (Jr), Kate Dacimo (Fr), Sarah Jane Otey (Fr), Sarah Southard (Sr), and Rory Keegan (Jr).

 
Women's Crew - Varsity Eight Wins Petite Final at ECAC National Invite
WORCESTER, MASS.--(5/11/08)--The Coast Guard Academy Womenʼs Varsity 8 was edged out of the Grand Final by less than a length finishing fourth behind DI University of New Hampshire in their A/B Semi-Final on Sunday morning at the ECAC National Invitational held on Lake Quinsigamond.

The Bears qualified for the their Semifinal by finishing in the top two in their heat on Saturday evening, finishing second to the eventual 2008 ECAC Champion Williams College while beating two teams that finished ahead of them at the 2007 NCAA's, William Smith and Mary Washington as well as the University of Vermont.

Women's Crew - Bears Send Two to Grand Final at NE Championships
WORCESTER, MASS.--(5/4/08)--Coast Guard posted solid times and good performances at the New England Rowing Championships held Saturday and New England Fours Championship held Sunday. The races were held under cloudy skies on Lake Quinsigamond.

The Women’s Novice 8 started off the racing in a fast heat and placed fourth to qualify for the petite finals. In the afternoon, the Bears fought hard through the 2000m course but couldn’t match the speed of Holy Cross and Trinity and finished 3rd in the race and 9th overall. The Novice 8 consisting of Allison Murray (Fr), MaryKate Netrour (Fr), Amy Harrison(Fr), Amanda Cousart (Fr), Gina Guiterrez (Fr), Sara Barrs (Fr), Mia Reizun (Fr), Jenifer Lopez (Fr), and Amy Tow (Fr) will prepare for a rematch this weekend at the ECAC National Invitational.

The Women’s Varsity 8 (4th CRCA/NCAA Division III national poll), posted a solid performance in the heats besting Bates (3rd CRCA/NCAA Division III national poll) and qualifying for the afternoon’s Grand Final. In the Grand Final, a race that featured the top four Division III teams in the nation along with two Division I teams the Bears had some trouble off the start and never quite got their footing, finishing 6th overall. The Bears look to some exciting racing next weekend at the ECAC National Invitational where the top 10 Division III Schools in the country will go head to head. Women's Crew - #4 Bears Beaten by #2 Williams; Defeat DI Marist
PITTSFIELD, MASS.--(4/26/08)--The Coast Guard Academy women's rowing team (ranked #4 in the CRCA/NCAA Division III national poll) went into this weekend ready for a showdown with some of the the top ranked DIII programs in the country including #2 Williams College, #3 Bates College, #6 Ithaca College, and DI Marist. The Bears came away with solid performances in preparation for next weekend's New England Championships.

The day started under cloudy skies, showers and extremely variable wind conditions, with varsity eights using a heat/finals format racing, with the heat winners and next fastest overall time advancing to the Grand Final. The Bears drew the first heat racing against Williams in a 2-boat heat. The Bears raced solidly against the defending national champions and finished in a time of 7:20.5; 7.5 seconds behind Williams. With the wind conditons ever-changing, the second heated posted a Bates, Ithaca and Marist finishing order and with times over ten seconds faster than heat one; so the Bears were relegated to the Petite Finals, never getting the opportunity to square off against Bates or Ithaca, where they won easily over DI Marist by a 17 second margin. Williams went on to win the Grand Final, beating Bates by just over 5 seconds and Ithaca by 14 seconds.
