Women's Crew - Varsity 8 Repeats as NEWMAC Champs

The Bears Varsity 8 won the NEWMAC Championship for the 2nd straight season.
WORCESTER, MASS.--(4/19/08)--The US Coast Guard Academy women's varsity eight (ranked #3 in the CRCA/NCAA Division III weekly regional poll) defeated #9 Mt. Holyoke, Smith College (#10), Wellesley, WPI, and Clark on Saturday at the 2008 NEWMAC Championships in Worcester, MA to win their second straight NEWMAC championship.

Seniors Adriana Knies and Sarah Southard were named to the varsity All-conference team while freshman Sarah Jane Otey was named to the Novice All-conference team.

The Bears varsity eight finished just over five seconds ahead of Mt. Holyoke in a time of 6:52.07. The Bears pushed out to a four seat advantage through the first 500m of the race and as the crews passed through the halfway, or 1000 meter mark, the Bears continued to extend their lead to just over a length.

Women's Crew - #3 Bears beat #11 Colby
LOWELL, MASS.-(4/12/08)--In fast conditions on the Merrimack River, the US Coast Guard Academy women's varsity eight (ranked #3 in the CRCA/NCAA Division III weekly national polls) defeated #11 Colby College. The Bears varsity eight lead wire-to-wire and finished just over 17 seconds ahead of Colby in a time of 5:48.99. The top eight moved well off of the line and continued to build it's lead throughout the course of the race.

The CGA Women's Crew Varsity 4+ A entry, comprised of rowers from the Bear's second varsity eight lead off the day of racing with a solid win over traditional fours schools including Franklin Pierce, UMass-Lowell, Massachusetts Maritime Academy as well as a CGA B entry in a time of 7:01.56, 8 seconds ahead of the field.

Women's Crew - Bears Varsity 8 Beats UConn, Loses to #1 Trinity
COVENTRY, CONN.--(4/5/08)--Coast Guard's varsity eight, ranked #5 in the CRCA/NCAA Division III national poll, lost to rival Trinity College, ranked first in the nation, but beat Division I University of Connecticut.

Off the line, all eights were level and as they moved through the second 500 meters the Bears started to drift off the pace of the higher rating crews. As they moved through the middle of the race the Bears found themselves in third positon while the Bantams took control of the race. With just under 800 meters to go the Bears began to move back on UConn, and finished the race in second in a time of 7:03.9, 13 seconds off the fast early season pace of Trinity and less than a half a second ahead of UConn.

The Varsity 8 was comprised of Tenley Barna (Sr), Adriana Knies (Sr), Maggie Ward (Jr), Emily Holt (Sr), Lauren Milici (Jr), Kate Dacimo (Fr), Sarah Jane Otey (Fr), Sarah Southard (Sr), and Rory Keegan (Jr).

Women's Crew - Varsity Eight Wins Season Opener
WORCESTER, MASS.--(3/29/08)--The Coast Guard Academy women's rowing team opened their season with strong performances in wintry conditions on Lake Quinsigamond.

Competing against Divison I Holy Cross and Divison III Wesleyan University and Mt. Holyoke, the Bears women's varsity 8 (ranked #8 in the CRCA/NCAA Division III polls) started off the day of racing finishing three seconds ahead of Holy Cross in a time of 6:48.0 while beating Mt. Holyoke (#7) and Wesleyan (#12) by 13 and 30 seconds respectively.

Off the line, the Bears were second with a conservative start but quickly found their rhythm and pulled level with the leader, Holy Cross, by the 1000m mark. During the second half of the race, CGA established themselves as the leader and extended their lead while maintaining a stroke rate under the rest of the field.
