 Jesse Karr allowed just one earned run to pickup a win in the final home game of his career. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/16/11)--Coast Guard used a pair of solid pitching outings from senior Jesse Karr and sophomore Derek Petty to sweep Springfield 3-2 and 6-2 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader, the final conference games of the season.
The Bears clinched the fourth and final spot in the NEWMAC tournament with the game one win. Coast Guard is now 19-13 overall and finished 9-9 in conference play. It is just the second time in the 13 years of the NEWMAC that Coast Guard finished .500 or better in conference play. The fourth-seeded Bears will open NEWMAC tournament play at top-seeded Wheaton on Wednesday.

 Nolan Gallagher had two hits including an RBI single to tie the game in the ninth inning. SPRINGFIELD, MASS.--(4/15/11)--Karl Quist singled to drive in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead Springfield College to a 9-8 victory over Coast Guard Academy in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game at SC's Berry-Allen Field.
With the win, Springfield halted a five-game losing streak to up its record to 10-17 overall, 4-12 in the NEWMAC. Coast Guard is now 17-13 overall, and 7-9 in the league. The Bears are tied with WPI for the fourth and final NEWMAC tournament playoff spot with two games left in the conference portion of the schedule.
Mike McGowan, who went 4-for-6 and scored four runs on the day, led off the 10th with a double to right-center field. He was sacrificed to third. After John Schmaltz was intentionally walked, the next batter grounded out to the pitcher, with Schmaltz advancing to second.
Quist then singled, scoring McGowan, to win it for the Pride. |

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/12/11)--Freshman Michael Bortolotti allowed eight hits and four unearned runs in seven innings work as Babson clinched at least a tie for the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season championship with a 9-6 win over Coast Guard.
Babson (21-9, 13-5), playing its final conference game of the season, overcame eight errors and four of the Bears six runs were unearned.
Senior Dave Ahern led off the game with a homer to left before junior Billy Miller doubled and later scored on a ground out by sophomore Chris Kucher for a 2-0 lead.
Coast Guard scored an unearned run in the third and Babson took a 3-1 lead on an RBI single by junior Travis Jonasson in the fourth. The Beavers extended the lead to 4-1 on an RBI single by sophomore Pat Matvichuk in the fifth. |

 Tyler Vieira registered his school-record eighth save in the game two win. HOLDEN, MASS.--(4/9/11)--Sophomore Tyler Vieira picked up his Coast Guard Academy career record eighth save to nail down the Bears 9-6 win in game two of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader vs. WPI after the Engineers won the opener 4-2.
The split allowed the Bears, 17-11 overall, to win the three-game weekend set and move into a fourth place tie with WPI at 7-7 in conference play. By winning the series, the Bears now hold the important tiebreaker for the fourth and final seed in the NEWMAC tournament.
Vieira broke the record of seven career saves set by Matt Smith (2000-03) and registered his sixth of the season.
Coast Guard starter sophomore Derek Petty allowed four runs in the first inning, but settled down and pitched seven innings allowing just two runs and five hits over the final six innings to even his record at 3-3 on the season. |
