FORT MYERS, FLA.--(3/7/10)--Freshman Derek Petty pitched six innings, allowing just four hits a pair of unearned runs to pickup a win in his first collegiate start as Coast Guard salvaged a split of a doubleheader with Merchant Marine with a 3-2 win after losing the opener 5-4 at the Gene Cusic Classic.

Petty went the six innings and walked four and struck out four. He got a double play ball with the bases loaded to get out of the sixth inning. Freshman Tyler Babkiewich, making his first collegiate pitching appearance, picked up the save as he pitched the seventh.

Coast Guard, trailing 1-0, took the lead in the top of the fourth with a pair of unearned runs as sophomore Chris Izurieta tied the game with a sacrifice fly before junior Graham Sherman gave the Bears the lead for good with an RBI single.

Baseball - Bears Drop Season Opener 7-4

FORT MYERS, FLA.--(3/6/10)--Elms took advantage of 12 walks, three hit batters and five errors and despite getting just four hits, the Blazers beat Coast Guard 7-4 at the Gene Cusic Classic, the season opener for both teams.

Coast Guard started five freshman including starting pitcher James Diddell, who worked six innings and allowed three hits, six runs, five earned, but he walked nine while striking out three in taking the loss. Freshman Tyler Vieira was impressive in his collegiate debut as he worked the final three innings allowing just one hit, an unearned run while walking three and striking out five.

The Blazers led 3-0 after two innings before Coast Guard scored twice in the home half of the third on an RBI ground out by Steve Arguelles and an RBI single by freshman Tyler Babkiewich, the first hit and RBI of his career.

Baseball - 2010 Season Preview

Ryan Milligan, who hit .281 last year, is the top returning hitter for the Bears.

There will be plenty of new faces for the Coast Guard Academy baseball team as the Bears return just two starters to the everyday lineup and welcome 15 newcomers to the diamond for the 2010 season.

Coast Guard was 7-23 overall last season and 2-10 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). The Bears returned home from Florida with a 4-4 record, but would win just three more games the rest of the season, including dropping all 11 home games.

The Bears will look to finish over .500 for the first time since 2002 and head coach C.C. Grant in his fourth season, will count on the one-two pitching punch of junior tri-captain Jesse Karr (2-4, 6.79) and freshman Derek Petty to lead the way.

“I’m very happy with the top of our rotation in Jesse and Derek, who will get the ball each weekend in conference play. Jesse finished very strong for us last year and Derek, if he develops each year, has the ability to be as good as any pitcher that we have had,” said Grant.

John Jeffares had the eventual game winning hit to send the seven seniors out with a win in the season finale.

NORWICH, CONN.—(4/29/09)—Junior John Jeffares’ two-run single capped a four-run sixth as Coast Guard rallied for a season ending 5-4 win over Mitchell in a non-conference game between the two New London schools played at Dodd Stadium a game in which seven seniors played their final collegiate game for the Bears.

Coast Guard (7-23) struck first as senior Thomas Cameron, a first year player, making his first career start, drove in his first career run, an RBI ground out in the second as the Bears took a 1-0 lead.

Mitchell (10-19) tied the game in the third as sophomore Joseph Ramon led off with a double and came around to tie the game on a wild pitch.

The Mariners took the lead in the fourth as sophomore John McGarry led off with triple and scored on a single by junior Jared Bishop for a 2-1 lead.
