Baseball - Bears Split With Merchant Marine

Pete Schofield was outstanding in the game one win for the Bears.
FT. MYERS, FLA.—-(3/8/09)—-Senior Pete Schofield pitched a complete game scattering five hits and not allowing an earned run in the opener as Coast Guard beat Merchant Marine 12-2 before the Mariners scored 11 runs in the first two innings and held on for a 12-10 win in the nightcap as the teams split a doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Classic.

Coast Guard (1-2) exploded for nine runs in the third inning of game one to erase a 1-0 deficit. The Bears had seven hits and took advantage of four errors sending 13 men to the plate in the third inning.

Freshman Nic Freburg had a two-run single in the third while freshman Eddie Kalankiewicz, senior Bill Birch and junior John Jeffares each had RBI singles in the inning.

Baseball - Bears Drop Season Opener 8-3

Senior Steve Lewis reached base all five times in the season opening loss.
FT. MYERS, FLA.--(3/7/09)--Eastern Nazarene took advantage of six walks, a hit batter and three wild pitches total in the fifth and sixth innings as they scored seven runs enroute to an 8-3 win over Coast Guard at the Gene Cusic Classic, the season opener for both teams.

Sophomore Jesse Karr, who took the loss, worked into the fifth and left with the game tied 2-2 and two runners on, the Bears bullpen gave up two more runs, both on wild pitches in the fifth and then four more in the sixth on three walks, two hits, a hit batter and a two-run error.

2009 Season Preview - Bears Counting on Young Arms in 2009

Senior Bill Birch, who still start at shortstop, is the top returning hitter for the Bears.
Coast Guard will look to turn things around in the 2009 season as the Bears look to finish over .500 for the first time since 2002.

Last year, the Bears finished 7-21 overall and 1-11 in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play missing the conference tournament for the first time after advancing to the semifinals in seven of the previous eight seasons.

Coast Guard allowed 10 or more runs 13 times and the team was 0-18 when allowing six or more runs last season. The team ERA was 7.44.

The Bears raised their team average almost 40 points from the 2007 season as the team hit .302 last season, but errors cost them dearly as they committed 83 errors which led to 72 unearned runs.

Baseball - Bears Split With Mitchell to End Season

Ken Franklin drove in three runs in the opener as the Bears beat Mitchell 7-5.
NORWICH, CONN.--(4/30/08)--Ken Franklin drove in three runs and Pete Schofield pitched a complete game leading Coast Guard to a 7-5 win in the opener before Cody Faddis pitched six solid innings leading Mitchell to a 7-6 win in game two of a non-conference doubleheader at Dodd Stadium, the final games of the season for Coast Guard.

Coast Guard (7-21) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game one as the Bears scored twice in the first on a two-run double by Kevin Higgins and then three times in the second on an RBI single by Christian George and a two-run single by Franklin.

George and Higgins each had two hits in the opener for the Bears.

Mitchell (14-15) scored four runs in the fourth inning, scoring on a wild pitch, balk and back-to-back RBI singles by Robert McHugh and Clayton Boegler.

The Bears responded with two in the home half on a bases loaded walk to Bill Birch and an RBI groundout by Franklin for a 7-4 lead.

Mitchell scored the final run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Alex Hamlin in the seventh inning.
