Baseball - Vieira Named to All-New England team

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/24/10)--Coast Guard freshman pitcher Tyler Vieira has been named to the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-New England Division III third team.

Vieira and the Bears advanced all the way to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament championship game and ended the season with a record of 12-18.

The freshman right hander posted the sixth best single-season ERA in school history with an earned run average of 1.78.

He made 16 appearances all in relief and tied for the team lead with three wins as he finished the season with a 3-1 record. Vieira threw 35.3 innings and allowed just seven earned runs while walking 15 and striking out a team-high 42 batters. His opponents hit just .194 off of him.

Baseball - Babkiewich Named to NEWMAC First Team

Tyler Babkiewich earned NEWMAC first team honors for the Bears, who advanced to the NEWMAC championship game.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/27/10)--Coast Guard freshman Tyler Babkiewich was named to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Baseball All-conference first team in voting by the leagues seven head coaches.

Babkiewich becomes the first Coast Guard player since 2007 to earn NEWMAC first team honors.

Coast Guard made a magical run all the way to the NEWMAC tournament championship game this past weekend as the fifth-seeded Bears, after losing their first game of the tournament, won three straight elimination games before falling to top-seeded Wheaton in the championship game. It was the Bears fourth appearance in the NEWMAC championship game and first since 2003.

Baseball - Bears Magical Run Ends in Championship Game

NORTON, MASS.--(4/25/10)--Coast Guard saw its run at a first ever New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championship come to an end as host and top-seeded Wheaton beat the fifth-seeded Bears 23-4 in the NEWMAC tournament championship game. The Lyons earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Coast Guard, which was 9-17 after a first round loss in the tournament, won three straight games to reach the fourth NEWMAC championship game in program history and first since 2003.

The Bears swept Springfield on the final day of regular season play in the conference just to qualify for the tournament. Coast Guard lost its first game of the tournament to second-seeded Babson 8-1 before winning three straight elimination games, two of those yesterday. The Bears beat MIT 7-6 in 11 innings before a 14-5 win over Babson, which had won the three previous meetings this season. Coast Guard then earned a spot in the championship game with an 8-6 win over third-seeded WPI.

Baseball - Bears Continue Amazing Run; Advance to NEWMAC Championship Game

NORTON, MASS.--(4/24/10)--Fifth-seeded Coast Guard, which had to sweep a doubleheader and did so on a walkoff home run by freshman Tyler Babkiewich, just to qualify for the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament last weekend, upset second-seeded Babson and then eliminated third-seeded WPI, erasing a 6-1 deficit, to win 8-6 and advance to the championship game vs. top-seed and host Wheaton.

The Bears (12-17) will play Wheaton at 11 a.m. tomorrow. This is Coast Guard's fourth trip to the NEWMAC tournament championship game and first since 2003 when the Bears beat Wheaton 11-7 to force a second championship game which they lost 7-0.

Wheaton has beaten the Bears all three times in the NEWMAC championship game. Coast Guard is making its first appearance in the NEWMAC tournament since 2007.
