Baseball - WPI Blanks Bears

Ben Barrett pitched five solid innings of relief for the Bears.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/14/09)--Senior Conor Fahey allowed just two singles and struck out ten over eight innings and WPI scored nine times in the fourth inning enroute to a 13-0 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Fahey (4-1) allowed a leadoff single to freshman Joe Petry and a single to senior Steve Lewis in the sixth and also walked just one while recording double figure strikeouts for the fourth time this season.

WPI (18-9, 7-3) got all it would need in the third on a sacrifice fly by junior Joe Walsh and a bases loaded walk to freshman Mitch McClune for a 2-0 lead.

Baseball - MIT Sweeps Bears in Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE, MASS.--(4/13/09)--Freshman Torre Swanson and sophomore Ryne Barry delivered tremendous starts on the mound for MIT and the Tech bats enjoyed an equally-effective afternoon, as the Engineers dropped NEWMAC rival Coast Guard in a pair of conference games on Monday at Briggs Field.

Thomas Phillips drove in a career-high seven runs to pace an 18-1 victory for the Cardinal and Gray in game one, while the Engineers hung on for a 7-4 win in the nightcap.

Mike Ahlin endured a tough loss for the Bears (6-18, 2-7 NEWMAC) in the first game, as the Coast Guard defense committed eight errors. After Creed Mangrum doubled with one out in the first inning of the opener, he scored on Dan Hyatt's single through the left side. Phillips followed with an RBI single to center, and later scored on a single to center by Steven Nunez to give MIT a 3-0 lead after one.

Baseball - Late Rally Falls Short

WORCESTER, MASS.--(4/8/09)--Coast Guard rallied for six runs in the ninth, but the Bears comeback effort fell short, losing to WPI 14-10 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

WPI jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings before freshman Eddie Kalankiewicz hit a two-run homer in the sixth and junior Ryan Milligan added a solo shot in the inning to cut the deficit to 4-3.

The Engineers (16-9, 5-3) answered in the home half of the sixth with four runs to chase Coast Guard starter Mike Ahlin (1-6), who took the loss.

WPI led 14-4 entering the ninth, but senior Brian Yurovich had an RBI single scoring junior Keith Laird, who led off with a double. Senior Bill Birch added an RBI single and Laird had his second hit of the inning a two-run single to make the score 14-10.

Laird had three hits while Milligan and Kalankiewicz added two hits for the Bears (6-16, 2-5).
 
Baseball - Wheaton Rallies In Opener; Sweeps Bears

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/4/09)--The Wheaton College baseball team took two from host United States Coast Guard Academy in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons grinded out an 8-6 victory in game one before hanging on for a 12-10 win in the second contest.

A winner in 19 of its last 20 games while remaining unbeaten through seven league contests, the Blue and White, which is ranked second nationally by D3baseball.com and first in the region by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA), raised its record to 20-2. Coast Guard fell to 6-15 and 2-4.
