Senior diver Orlando Morel, who graduated today, says he would probably be dead had the Coast Guard not found him and his fellow migrants when he was 6 years old and he and his mother left Haiti on a crowded small wooden boat destined for America.

Men's Swimming - Five Named to NEWMAC All-Academic team

Jeff Mistrick earned All-Academic team honors for the second time.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(2/27/12)--The Coast Guard Academy placed five cadet-athletes on the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men’s Swimming and Diving All-Academic team.

Senior Jeff Mistrick (Mechanical Engineering) and junior Nick Poehler (Mechanical Engineering) earned All-Academic honors for the second time in their careers.

Junior Michael Piantedosi (Management) and sophomores Marc McAndrew (Electrical Engineering) and Eric Bonomi (Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering) were named to the team for the first time.

Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2011 fall semester, achieved second year academic status at his institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.

Men's Swimming - Duryea Named Rookie of the Year

Derrian Duryea was named NEWMAC Rookie of the Year
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(2/22/12)--Coast Guard freshman Derrian Duryea has been named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men’s Rookie of the Year for his performance at the NEWMAC Championship meet this past weekend at MIT.

Duryea placed third in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.28), fourth in the 100 breaststroke (58.66) and 12th in the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.12, the top freshman in all three events.

He was also part of the 200 medley relay team which earned All-conference honors with a second place finish setting a school-record with a time of 1:33.31.

Men's Swimming - Bears Take 2nd Place at NEWMAC Championships

Johnson Knox was part of three second place relays for the Bears.
CAMBRIDGE, MASS.--(2/19/12)--Coast Guard placed second for the fourth straight season at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships.

MIT successfully defended the championship as the Engineers led from start to finish to claim the 2012 title. MIT won its fifth straight title, scoring 1,219 points. The Bears finished second with 735 points.

Three of the Bears relay teams earned All-conference honors with second place finishes.

Senior Johnson Knox has been part of all three relay teams that earned All-conference this weekend.

The 200 freestyle relay team is on of freshman Christian Brindamour and seniors Knox, Brian McGuiness and Dan Beshoar placed second in 1:23.83. They posted an NCAA B cut time of 1:23.11 in the time trial on Sunday night. Brindamour's lead off leg time of 20.93 was the fastest freshman time in Coast Guard history. The relay team is on the bubble for a spot at the NCAA Championships.
