Intercollegiate rifle is a coed sport, in which the competitors fire precision smallbore and air rifles at 50 feet and 10 meters respectively. Each member of the team is required to shoot 40 shots in the prone, kneeling and standing positions. The combined scores of four pre-selected shooters decide the match results.
The collegiate rifle season is a winter sport, culminating with the NCAA National Championships held in March. The Coast Guard Academy Rifle Team competes in the Middle Atlantic Conference, which consists of 23 schools from Vermont to Virginia.
The Coast Guard Academy Rifle Team competes with smallbore (.22 caliber) and air rifles on a modern, 20-point indoor range located beneath the cadet barracks. The Varsity Rifle Team consists of 20 men and women from all four classes. Each member of the team is issued state-of-the-art Anschutz rifles, which are then fitted to the individual shooters. From October through March, the team travels to matches throughout the Northeast and competes against each of the other Service Academies annually. |
