Alyssa McDonald was named an All-American in Sport Pistol NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/23/09)--Coast Guard Academy senior Alyssa McDonald had been named to the All-American team in Sport Pistol.
Consistent and exemplary performance is a hallmark, perhaps the most evident characteristic, of the honor. All-American is a very difficult award to earn—it is based on an entire season’s match scores and is extremely competitive. The signature award for a collegiate All-American is a Golden Bullet tie tac: McDonald is now among the very few pistol shooters that can wear that award. |

Alyssa McDonald won the silver medal in women’s sport pistol and to Heather Johanson who won the bronze medal in women’s air pistol. After a demanding and face-paced season, Bears pistol has once again risen to the challenge and dominated the competition. Beginning on Friday, February, 13th, the sectionals competition held at MIT in Cambridge, Mass.
The 60 shot combined team consisted of senior Alyssa McDonald (525), sophomore Josh Schwartz (522), sophomore Brenden Kelley (504), and freshman Kent Hunt (539). Everyone shot very solid scores, right in line with their average despite the immense pressure. The exception was Hunt, his 539 was a personal best which is only three points below the likely cut score for individual invitations to the National Championships. Quite the accomplishment for a first-year pistol shooter. |

While the rest of America was celebrating Halloween, the USCGA Bears and MIT Beavers were staying away from the jittery effects of sugary candy.
This past weekend, the two teams battled here on the Bears home soil. All of the matches (air, women’s air, standard, sport, and free) were close. Coach Brubaker (the Bears new head coach who is a retired Captain, USCG) referred to the standard pistol match as the real “heartbreaker of the day” with the CGA falling only four points short of victory over MIT.
Many of the Bears’ shooters shot personal records. In addition, with certain shooters right on the border of shooting national qualifying scores, the pistol team is clearly improving. This was also the first match for several of the team’s fourth class shooters, one of whom shot a 507 in air at his first match.
At the rate the Coast Guard Academy’s team has been improving, they can be assured that their efforts will be rewarded in the near future. Stay posted for results of the Bears next match as they travel this weekend to Navy. |

The Bears are looking for a veteran team to do big things this season. U.S. Coast Guard Academy Pistol is underway and all ahead full for the 2008-2009 NRA Division 1 season.
After having a novice team leading the way last year, the Bears now have a large group of well seasoned shooters. With new captains, seniors Mike Langelier and Alyssa McDonald taking the reins with confidence and high expectations, they anticipate a prosperous season resulting with some new “bling” to decorate the Academy walls.
Some returning stars from nationals are seniors Rabii Boughdiri, Langelier, McDonald and sophomore Joshua Schwartz. Aiding to the Bears rise to success this season will be returning shooters, seniors John Mansolillo and Weston Kruse, junior Hayla Dubolsky along with sophomores Heather Johanson, Dan Cahill, Brenden Kelley, Alexander Rulon and Jillian Hoffman.
By starting the shooting season a few weeks earlier than previous years, the team hopes with this extra practice and even greater dedication, that the efforts will well pay off by nationals. |
