 Kaitlin Ward's fast start earned her a spot on the NEWBA weekly honor roll. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/30/11)--Sophomore Kaitlin Ward has been named to the New England Women’s Basketball Association (NEWBA) first weekly honor roll for her performance in the first three games of the season.
Ward averaged a double-double with 21.3 points and 10.0 rebounds per game in three victories for the Coast Guard Academy. She also dished out 17 assists and added 10 steals for the Bears, who are off to a 4-0 start after winning just three games last season.
She is second in the NEWMAC with 18.8 points per game while leading the conference with 10.8 rebounds per game this season.
The Bears open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play tonight at Wheaton at 7 p.m.

 Brittney Zimmerman had a season-high 25 points as the Bears improved to 4-0. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/28/11)--Freshman Brittney Zimmerman had 18 of her season-high 25 points in the second half and Coast Guard broke a 48-48 tie with 5:35 left by scoring the final 18 points of the game to remain unbeaten on the season with a 66-48 non-conference win over Curry.
Coast Guard, which won just three games last season, improves to 4-0 for the first time since the 2007-2008 season. Curry drops to 0-4.
The Colonels had their biggest lead of the game 30-21 with 3:17 left in the first half before the Bears scored the final five of the half and trailed 30-26 at the break.

 Dani Knox had her first career double-double as the Bears improved to 3-0. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/21/11)--Sophomore Kaitlin Ward had career-highs with 26 points and 15 rebounds to go with six assists as Coast Guard remained unbeaten with an 84-38 win at Mitchell in a non-conference game between the two New London schools.
Coast Guard, which won just three games last season and finished 3-21 overall, improved to 3-0 on the season while Mitchell drops to 1-3 on the young season.
The game was tied at 8-8 over the first six minutes before freshman Alexi Howland’s 3-pointer gave Coast Guard the lead for good 11-8 with 13:27 left in the first half.
Mitchell freshman Sheanna James’ bucket with 8:45 left in the first half cut the Mariners deficit to 15-14, but that would be the final field goal of the half for the Mariners. Coast Guard scored 13 straight points turning that 15-14 lead into a 28-14 lead with 2:39 left. The Mariners would add a pair of free throws by senior Bianca Young with 1:09 left and Coast Guard led 28-16 at the break. |

 Kaitlin Ward had a huge week to earn NEWMAC Player of the Week honors. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/21/11)--Coast Guard Academy sophomore Kaitlin Ward earned the first New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Award this season.
Ward averaged 19 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and four steals in wins over Framingham State and Johnson & Wales as Coast Guard which won just three games last season, started the season with a pair of wins for the first time in four years.
She started the season scoring a career-high 23 points to go with seven rebounds in a season-opening 69-57 win over Framingham State and followed up that performance as she filled the stat sheet with 15 points, eight rebounds, six assists and five steals in a 78-58 win over Johnson & Wales on Saturday.
Ward shot 38.9 percent from the floor (14-36) and a sizzling 50 percent (7-14) from 3-point range.
