THOUSAND OAKS, CA.--(11/17/07)--Melissa Martinelli's baseline jumper with 34 seconds left tied the game and Coast Guard went on to beat California Lutheran 51-46 in overtime as the Bears improved to 2-0 on the season.
Martinelli, who had 20 points in the Bears' season opening win on Friday night, scored the final five points in regulation as Coast Guard overcame a five-point deficit with just over four minutes to play. She again led the Bears with 20 points a game-high 15 rebounds. |

 Melissa Martinelli had 20 points leading the Bears to a season opening win. WHITTIER, CA.--(11/16/07)--Sophomore Melissa Martinelli had 20 points and freshman Jennifer Tamminen had 16 points in her collegiate debut leading Coast Guard to a 55-50 win over Whittier in the season opener for both teams.
Coast Guard led by three in the closing minutes when Tamminen scored and was fouled. She made the free throw to put the game away for the Bears. |

 Senior Natalie Moyer and the Bears look to get to post season play for the just the second time in school history. Coast Guard returns its top five scorers, four starters, led by honorable mention All-America guard and team captain Natalie Moyer as the Bears look to earn a postseason berth for just the second time in school history, the 2001-2002 team earned a bid to the ECAC Tournament.
The Bears, who were 13-13 overall last season and 6-7 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), have lost in the first round of the NEWMAC tournament in each of the last four seasons after playing in the championship game in the 2002-2003 season.
“We want to compete in every game, compete for the NEWMAC championship and get a postseason bid,” said head coach Alex Simonka in his 15th season. “We play a tough schedule early, as we always do, and it will help us get prepared for conference play.” |

 DeCarol Davis was named the 2007 Arthur Ashe Jr. Female Sports Scholar of the Year. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/4/07)--Coast Guard junior DeCarol Davis has been named the 2007 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar of the Year by Diverse Issues in Higher Education. Davis was choosen from a pool of over 600 student athletes.
Davis was also recently named the Coast Guard Academy’s first ever Truman Scholar.
The junior guard started all 26 games this season and is ranked first in the junior class of 237 cadets as she carries a 3.95 GPA in Electrical Engineering. She averaged 9.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game for Coast Guard which finished 13-13 overall this season.
Davis, a Rhodes Scholar representative, is on the Commandant of Cadet’s List for Military Excellence, the Dean’s List and served as Class President as a freshman and sophomore. |
