Women's Basketball - Rick Gaines Named Head Coach

Rick Gaines takes over a team that returns four starters next season.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(6/10/09)--Rick Gaines has been named the head coach of the Coast Guard Academy women’s basketball team. Gaines has served as an assistant coach with the program for the past ten seasons.
         
Gaines, a captain in the Coast Guard, is a 1978 graduate of the Academy and was a member of both the tennis and basketball teams. He also served as an assistant coach with the Coast Guard men’s basketball team on three different occasions from 1984-’86, 1987-’89 and from 1990-’92.
         
Captain Gaines is a member of the permanent commissioned teaching staff at the Academy and teaches chemistry in the Science Department. He earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Connecticut in 1998.

Women's Basketball - Martinelli Choosen as ECAC All-Star

Melissa Martinelli was named to the ECAC All-Star team.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/8/09)--Junior Melissa Martinelli, who led the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) in scoring this season, earned her third All-region honor of the season.

Martinelli was named to the ECAC Division III New England All-Star second team.

Earlier she had earned first team All-Northeast Region honors from D3hoops.com for the second straight season and was also named a second team All-Region selection by the New England Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (NEWBA).

Martinelli, a first team All-conference selection for the second straight season, led the NEWMAC in scoring with 19.8 points per game, she was third in field goal percentage (.531), fifth in rebounding (8.9) and sixth in free throw percentage (.780).

Basketball - Bears Place Trio on NEWMAC All-Academic team

Melissa McCafferty was one of three Bears named to the NEWMAC All-Academic basketball teams.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/4/09)--Coast Guard placed three student-athletes on the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Academic men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Senior Chanel Lee and sophomore Melissa McCafferty were named to the women’s basketball All-Academic team while senior Justin Church was named to the men’s All-Academic team.

Lee is a Civil Engineering major, McCafferty is a Government major while Church is a Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering major at the Academy.
