Men's Basketball - Bears Late Rally Falls Short

WENHAM, MASS.--(11/19/10)--Senior Greg Walker had a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds and host Gordon had to hold off a late Coast Guard charge to beat the Bears 67-57 in the first round North Shore Tip-Off tournament.

The Bears trailed 55-35 with 7:39 left, but used a 21-5 run to cut the lead to 60-56 on a 3-pointer by sophomore Ed Gailor with 1:43 left, but Gordon held on for the win.

Coast Guard (1-2) will play in the consolation game at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Gordon (1-1), which was the Bears third straight opponent that went to the NCAA tournament last season, will play in the championship game at 6 p.m. at Endicott College.

The Fighting Scots held Coast Guard to just two field goals in a span of just over 14 minutes as Gordon held Coast Guard without field goal for the first 6:23 of the second half and outscored the Bears 11-3 to start the half to take a 39-25 lead.

Men's Basketball - Bears Surprise Albertus in Home Opener

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/17/10)--Sophomore Greg Marshall had career-highs with 27 points and ten rebounds, his first career double-double and one of four Coast Guard players to post a double-double, as the Bears knocked off Albertus Magnus 97-72 in the home opener.

Albertus Magnus (0-1), playing its season opener, went to the second round of the NCAA tournament last season and is returning all but one player from that team while Coast Guard started three freshmen.

Coast Guard jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first four and a half minutes. Albertus got as close as 29-23 with 7:20 left in the first half. The Bears scored eight of the final ten points in the half turning a 41-33 edge into a 49-35 halftime lead.

The Bears never let Albertus Magnus back in the game shooting 63.6 percent from the floor in the second half (14-22) and making 18 of 23 from the foul line in the second half. Coast Guard led by as many as 31 at 95-64 with 3:34 left.

Men's Basketball - Bears Drop Opener at Merchant Marine

KINGS POINT, N.Y.--(11/15/10)--Merchant Marine scored ten straight points, using an 18-4 run late in the second half, and beat rival Coast Guard 83-72 in a non-conference game, the season opener for both teams.

Merchant Marine, which went to the NCAA tournament last season and was the picked second in the Landmark Conference this season, shot a sizzling 55.6 percent (30-54) from the floor and six of 11 from 3-point range while Coast Guard, which started three freshmen and a pair of sophomores shot 35.1 percent (26-74) from the floor and seven of 23 from 3-point range.

The Mariners outrebounded Coast Guard 41-35, the Bears had 15 offensive rebounds while Merchant Marine had nine offensive boards.

Men's Basketball - 2010-11 Season Preview

Coast Guard has plenty of talented newcomers that will be mixed with experienced sophomores and four seniors as the Bears look to post a winning record for the first time since 2007-’08 when the team finished 24-7 and advanced to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament.

Head coach Kevin Jaskiewicz, in his second season, will replace a trio of seniors lost to graduation with four freshmen, all who will compete for playing time this year.

“These freshmen possess the qualities that we look for in our program,” said Jaskiewicz. “They are passionate about basketball, extremely competitive and are great teammates. They have a great opportunity to be outstanding officers in the Coast Guard.”
