COLLEGEVILLE, PA.—(3/15/08)—Coast Guard battled back from a seven-point second half deficit, but the Bears magical ride came to and end with a 82-76 loss to No. 16 Ursinus in the Elite 8 of the NCAA Division III tournament at host Ursinus.
Matt Hilton hit a back breaking 3-pointer with 1:43 left in overtime giving the host Bears a 77-72 lead and they held on for the win.
Ursinus (29-2) used a 9-2 run to take a 59-52 lead with 11:04 left following three free throws by junior John Noonan.
Coast Guard answered with seven straight as junior Craig Johnson, hit a 3-pointer, the team’s first of the second half, to tie the game 59-59 with 9:36 left.
Coast Guard led 62-61 following a free throw by senior Jeff Prebeck with 5:33 left before Ursinus ran off six straight for a 67-62 lead with 4:13 left, but Coast Guard then scored seven straight capped on a Johnson 3-pointer with 1:45 left for a 69-67 lead. Remy Cousart made a pair of free throws with 16.8 seconds left to tie the game at 69-69. |

 Al Sowers took over a tie game in the second half with nine straight points. The Bears are one win from the Final Four. COLLEGEVILLE, PA.—-(3/14/08)—-Senior Al Sowers scored nine straight points as the Bears used an 18-1 second half run to knock off No. 13 Rochester and continue their improbable run in the Division III NCAA Tournament with a 57-48 win at Ursinus College earning the Bears a berth in the Elite 8.
Coast Guard (24-6), which won its 13th straight, held Rochester (22-6) to a season-low 48 points.
The Bears, who have won a school-record 24 games, will play host Ursinus on Saturday night at 7 p.m. for a berth in the NCAA Division III Final Four.
Rochester led 39-34 with 13:15 left when sophomore Stefan Lewis hit a 3-pointer followed by a basket by classmate Eric Hudson to tie the game a 39-39 with 11:17 left. |

 Head coach Pete Barry won his 400th game to give the Bears a berth in the Sweet 16. DARTMOUTH, MASS.—(3/8/08)—Head Coach Pete Barry’s 400th win was his most memorable as the Coast Guard men’s basketball magical season rolls on, as the Bears are heading to the Sweet 16 for time in school history. Coast Guard outscored No. 10 UMass Dartmouth 18-2 over the final 12:48, including the final seven points of the game, turning a 13-point deficit into a 50-47 win and trip to the Sweet 16.
Coast Guard will take on Rochester in the Sweet 16 on Friday night at 6:00 at Ursinus College at Collegeville, Pa.
Senior Cory Tynes scored the first two baskets of the second half starting a 16-5 run which gave the Corsairs a 45-32 lead with 12:48 left.
Coast Guard (23-6) would not let the season end on this night as they battled back scoring 11 straight to start the 18-2 run, holding the Corsairs scoreless for over seven minutes.

(photo by Jeff Bartlett) HARTFORD, CONN.--(3/5/08)--Senior Jeff Prebeck led all scorers with 24 points to go with his game-high 10 rebounds while junior Craig Johnson sank a pair of free throws with 3.8 seconds left to ice the game as Coast Guard set a single-season record for wins and won its first ever NCAA Tournament first round game holding off No. 24 Trinity 70-65.
Coast Guard (22-6), the two-time defending New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament champions, advances to take on host No.10 UMass Dartmouth on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the second round with a berth to the Sweet 16 on the line.
The Bears, who won their 11th straight, shot 58.3 percent (14-24) in the second half and a season-high 52.9 percent for the game (27-51). Coast Guard became the first NEWMAC team to beat a NESCAC team in the NCAA Tournament since 2001. |
