NEW LONDON, CONN.--(1/11/12)--Senior Noel Hollingsworth had a game-high 24 points while junior Will Tashman added 21 points and a game-high 14 rebounds as MIT, ranked third nationally, improved to 15-0 with an 83-55 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

MIT, which also improved to 3-0 in conference play, jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the first five minutes of play and led 43-24 at halftime.
Coast Guard (6-6, 0-3), which dropped its third straight, scored the first five points of the second half cutting the deficit to 43-29 and the Bears trailed 59-44 with 11:37 left before the Engineers used a 12-2 spurt to put the Bears away taking a 71-46 lead with 6:42 remaining. |

 Greg Marshall had 19 of his-team high 26 points in the second half. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(1/7/12)--Junior Alex Berthiaume had a game-high 28 points as Springfield, which led by as many as 22 in the second half, held off a ferocious Coast Guard comeback to beat the Bears 84-82 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Coast Guard, which made just one of eight from 3-point range in the first half, shot a sizzling 80 percent hitting 12 of 15, including 11 straight from behind the arc, in the second half. The Bears missed a pair of shots in the closing seconds to tie the game.
Springfield led 40-24 at halftime and took its largest of the game 53-31 with 15:52 left in the game.
Coast Guard cut the lead in half trailing 68-57 with 8:56 left and then freshman Jesse Hughes and junior Greg Marshall hit back-to-back 3-pointers cutting the lead to 68-63 with 7:45 left. |

 Devonte Weems had 12 of his game-high 15 points in the first half. WORCESTER, MASS.--(1/4/12)--Matt Carr and Marco Coppola each scored 12 points as WPI defeated Coast Guard 64-53 on Wednesday evening in the NEWMAC conference opener for both programs.

WPI climbs to 10-2 with a 1-0 record in the NEWMAC standings while the loss sets Coast Guard back to 6-4 with a 0-1 record in conference play.
Scoring was slow for both teams early on, as the first field goal of the game wasn’t made until nearly four minutes into the game, a jumper from the Bears’ Greg Marshall to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
The Engineers would respond, however, with a 10-1 run capped off by a layup from Sam Longwell to give WPI an 11-3 lead with 12:26 remaining in the period. The Crimson and Gray gradually built on their lead for most of the half, forcing their trademark up-tempo style on the game. |

 Craig Johnson ('09), the Bears all-time leading scorer, is a member of the All-Military team. Craig Johnson, a 2009 graduate of the Coast Guard Academy and the Bears all-time leading scorer, is still competing on the hardwood as a member of the All-Military team.
Johnson scored a record 1,715 points in his collegiate career, a school-record while grabbing 898 rebounds which is third all-time at the Academy. He was a member of the 2007-08 team which won a school-record 24 games and advanced to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Division III tournament.
At 6 feet 5 inches tall, the center for the United States’ all-military team playing at Mons, Belgium, Nov. 26-Dec. 3, could be a member of any of the five military branches. That man standing tall in middle for the 48th Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers Europe International Basketball Tournament is Lt. j.g. Craig Johnson of Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team San Francisco.
Johnson continued to pursue opportunities to play basketball after commissioning. While stationed on the Coast Guard Cutter Gallatin, he was selected as part of the All-Navy team and then the all-military team at SHAPE last year.
That led to him returning to this year’s team. |
