The Cinderella team of the 2007 NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament, the Coast Guard Academy Bears, will take on Little East conference champion Rhode Island College on Friday night at 8 p.m. in the first round of the tournament at RIC. These teams have a history as Rhode Island College beat Coast Guard 76-71 in New London during the regular season overcoming a 19-point deficit to snap the Bears season long five-game win streak. RIC also beat Coast Guard 70-68 in overtime in the first round of the ECAC Tournament last season. RIC is 24-3 overall this season and the Anchormen have won eight straight games. Two of the three losses were to league rival Keene State which RIC beat in the Little East championship game 87-75. |

 Seventh-Seeded Coast Guard won its first NEWMAC Championship and earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1979. WORCESTER, MASS.--(2/25/07)-–Coast Guard won its first-ever NEWMAC Tournament title and earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1979, as the seventh-seeded Bears stunned top-seeded WPI Engineers, 71-66, at Harrington Auditorium on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears (14-13), become the first 7th seed to win the NEWMAC tournament and snapped WPI’s chances of making it three NEWMAC men’s titles in a row. The Engineers, ranked 13th in the nation, fall to 22-3. Sunday night, WPI earned an at-large bid while Coast Guard earned the automatic bid, the brackets will be released on Monday morning. |

 Al Sowers hit the game winning shot with 24.7 seconds left to put Coast Guard in the NEWMAC championship game for the first time in school history. WORCESTER, MASS.—(2/24/07)— Al Sowers scored the game winning basket breaking a 60-60 tie with 24.7 seconds left as Coast Guard becomes the first 7th seed to advance to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championship game as the Bears beat sixth-seeded Wheaton 62-60 in the semifinals. Coast Guard will make its first trip to the NEWMAC championship game and take on top-seed and host WPI in the championship game on Sunday at noon.
Wheaton’s David Harding missed a pair of free throws with 53 seconds left before Sowers hit the game winner. Brent DiGiovanna had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but his shot in the lane missed and Coast Guard’s Ryan Burgess secured the rebound and the win. |

 Grant Johnson had a school-record nine three-pointers as he scored a career-high 33 points as the Bears upset Babson. BABSON PARK, MASS.—(2/21/07)—Grant Johnson had a school-record nine three-pointers as he connected on his first nine three’s of the night and he sank a pair of free throws with nine seconds left as he finished with a career high 33 points as seventh-seeded Coast Guard beat second-seeded Babson 70-66 to become the first seventh seed ever to beat a two seed in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament.
Coast Guard outscored Babson 23-6 over the final 9:25 of the first half to take a 37-23 lead at halftime. |
