 Al Sowers shot a red-hot 61 percent from three-point range to earn NEWMAC Player of the Week honors. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(12/10/07)--Coast Guard Academy senior Al Sowers was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week as the Bears won all three games to improve to 8-0 for the first time in 15 years.
Sowers had a huge week as he averaged 20.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, two assists and two steals. The senior point guard shot 61 percent from three-point range (14-23) and 56 percent from the field (19-34). He had 26 points each in wins over Becker and Merchant Marine and he hit the game winning three-pointer with 35 seconds left in a 74-72 win over Wentworth. |

 Al Sowers tied a season-high with 26 points as the Bears improved to 8-0 on the season. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(12/8/07)--Senior Al Sowers tied a season-high with 26 points and Coast Guard shot 75 percent from the floor in the second half while using an 18-2 spurt to remain unbeaten with an 83-66 win over Merchant Marine in a non-conference game.
The Bears were 12 for 16 from the floor and six-of-nine from three-point range in the second half.
Coast Guard (8-0) led 43-42 with 12:50 left in the game when the Bears used an 18-2 run to take control, leading 61-44 with 8:05 left. Senior Grant Johnson had a pair of three-pointers in the run while Sowers had the final five points of the spurt. |

 Al Sowers hit the game-winning three-pointer with 35 seconds left as the Bears improved to 7-0 on the season. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(12/6/07)--Al Sowers knocked down a three-pointer with 35 seconds left giving Coast Guard a 73-72 lead and Coast Guard held on to win its seventh straight and remain unbeaten with a thrilling 74-72 win over Wentworth in a non-conference game.
Jeff Prebeck, who got an offensive rebound which led to the Sowers game winner, made one of two free throws with five seconds left to put the Bears up 74-72.
The Leopards (4-2) did not get a shot off in the final seconds.
Wentworth led by as many as five in the second half, 53-48 with 11:33 left before Coast Guard used a 12-0 run to take a 60-53 lead with 8:30 left. |

 Al Sowers had a season-high 26 points leading the Bears to their sixth straight win. LEICESTER, MASS.--(12/4/07)--Senior Al Sowers had a season-high 26 points, as he connected on six of 10 from three-point range, while junior Craig Johnson added 22 points and 13 rebounds as Coast Guard remained unbeaten and ran its win streak to six straight with a 79-69 win over Becker in non-conference game.
Johnson’s layup with 4:46 left capped a 10-2 spurt which gave Coast Guard its largest lead of the game at 73-58. The Bears scored six points in a 12 second span in that run.
The Hawks (3-4) made a run, outscoring Coast Guard 9-1 making the score 74-67, but could get no closer. |
