 Kevin Jaskiewicz, who served as the interim coach last season, was the choice after a national search. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/20/10)--Kevin Jaskiewicz, who served as the interim head coach of the Coast Guard Academy men’s basketball team last season, has been named the head coach following a national search.
Jaskiewicz, who was an assistant coach with Coast Guard for three seasons under Pete Barry, has had success coaching at every level of college basketball. He has been part of the Coast Guard coaching staff that won back-to-back New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament championships in 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Bears won a school-record 24 games and advanced all the way to the Elite 8 in 2007-2008.
“After a comprehensive national search that produced over 113 applicants, Kevin emerged as the top candidate on the basis of his basketball coaching experience, ability to recruit, and his commitment to teaching and mentoring cadets,” said Dr. Ray Cieplik, Coast Guard Academy Director of Athletics. |

 Aaron Jones reads to children as part of Dr. Seuss' Read Across America Day. (all photos by Tim Tamargo, CGA Public Affairs) On Tuesday, March 2nd, five Coast Guard Academy student athletes took part in the National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America Day which brings to light to Dr. Seuss’ birthday and literacy.
Senior men’s basketball players Aaron Jones and Stefan Lewis, women’s basketball player Melissa Martinelli, football player Tony Borruso and softball player Courtney Wolf read and held question and answer sessions about the Coast Guard, its Academy and athletics with kindergarten, first and second graders at West Vine Street School in Pawcatuck, Conn.
Some of the student’s donned red and white striped hats and all were very excited to interact with the student athletes and learn more about the Coast Guard, its mission and to get to know their special guest readers. |

 Coast Guard which won the Castle Championship early in the season also won the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/2/10)--The Coast Guard men’s basketball team was presented the annual New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference’s (NEWMAC) Men’s Basketball Sportsmanship Award on Tuesday.
The award is voted by on by the student-athletes from each of the seven teams in the conference.
The NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award to the team in each sport that most closely demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct.
Coast Guard won the inaugural NEWMAC Men’s Basketball Sportsmanship Award in 2007.
The Bears were 7-16 overall and 4-8 in the conference play this season. |

 Greg Marshall had a career-high 26 points in the loss. WORCESTER, MASS.--(2/24/10)--Third-seeded WPI jumped out to an 18-2 lead, but had to hold off sixth-seeded Coast Guard 76-71 in the quarterfinals of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament.
The Engineers used an 8-1 run to take a 68-55 lead with 5:05 left, but Coast Guard responded, with nine straight to cut the deficit to 68-64 with 2:22 left following a steal by senior Stefan Lewis and basket by freshman Greg Marshall.
Junior Kyle Nadeau knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:11 left before Marshall sank a pair of free throws and then knocked down a 3-pointer to make the score 71-69 with 52.1 seconds left. |
