WALTHAM, MASS.--(10/10/09)--Freshman Karen Matic recorded a triple-double with 11 kills, 10 digs and 25 assists leading Coast Guard to a 3-1 win (23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-18) over Keene State after the Bears lost to host Brandeis 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-20) in a tri-match.
Also in the win over Keene State, freshman Rachel Cuthrell had a career-high 10 blocks, sophomore Nicole Johnson had 11 kills, freshman Catherine Walker added 10 kills and junior Jessica Anderson led the way with 17 digs. |

 Rachel Cuthrell was part of a balanced Coast Guard attack with seven kills and a team-high five blocks. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(10/7/09)--Freshman Catherine Walker had 13 kills and three blocks while sophomore Nicole Johnson added 11 kills leading Coast Guard to a 3-1 win (23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 26-24) over Wesleyan in a non-conference match. The win snapped the Cardinals four match winning streak.
Wesleyan (6-9) rallied from a 16-11 deficit in the first game and later scored the final three points to win the opening game 25-23.
Coast Guard (14-2) tied the match with a 25-20 win in game two as the Bears scored four straight to break a 10-10 tie. The Bears led by as many as six at 24-18 before closing out the game.
The third game was a another tight one as Coast Guard led for throughout, but never by more than three, before winning 25-23. |

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is proud to announce the US Coast Guard Academy volleyball team as the second recipient of the newly created Volleyball Market/AVCA Play of the Week. The Bears earned the honor after beating out four other semifinalists – Dakota Wesleyan University, University of Hawai’i, University of North Florida and Tulane University – during a week-long voting period.
The award-winning play came during Coast Guard’s home match-up with New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Wellesley College on September 22, a match in which the Bears won 3-0. The play features several exhilarating dives to the floor by the Coast Guard players and is capped with a Bears’ stuffed block to earn the point during the 35 second rally. The victory extended Coast Guard’s home win-streak to 23 consecutive matches and allowed the team to remain unbeaten on the year at 9-0.

 Karen Matic led the Bears with 34 assists and 10 digs. WORCESTER, MASS.--(10/6/09)--Behind 11 kills and nine digs from sophomore Kristin McGinty host Clark University snapped an eight match losing streak to the United States Coast Guard Academy with a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 win over the visiting Bears in front of a raucous crowd at the Kneller Athletic Center in NEWMAC women's volleyball action.
The win four the Cougars ended a losing streak to USCGA that dated back to October 27, 2001. The Bears, playing without a pair of injured starters tonight, had dominated the series in such fashion that Clark hadn't won a game in any meeting since their 2001 victory.
That all changed in this meeting as the Cougars raced out to leads of 14-4 and 24-7 before settling for a 25-9 win in game one. |
