Volleyball - Bears Cruise to Victory in NCAA Tournament

CAMBRIDGE, MASS.—(11/9/06)—Sophomore Nicole Gurr had 16 kills and 10 digs as top-seeded Coast Guard extended its school-record winning streak to 20 straight with a 3-0 (30-18, 30-15, 30-18) win over eighth-seeded Mount Ida in the first round of the NCAA Division III volleyball tournament at MIT.

Junior co-captain Corinne McCormack had 10 kills and 14 digs for the Bears, who were playing in their first NCAA tournament since the 1997 season. Coast Guard was selected for the NCAA tournament in 1995, 1996 and 1997. The Bears won their NCAA first round game in each of those seasons before getting eliminated in the second round.

NEWMAC Player of the Year Christine Rostowfske, a senior co-captain, led the Bears with 35 assists while junior Kimberly Jung had 11 kills and a team-high four aces.

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/7/06)--Senior co-captain Christine Rostowfske was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Volleyball Player of the Year while head coach Patty Giannattasio earned Coach of the Year honors as the NEWMAC champion Bears took two of the three major awards in voting by the league’s 10 head coaches.

Sophomore Nicole Gurr was also named to the first team while junior co-captain Corinne McCormack earned second team honors.

Rostowfske, a second team All-conference selection last season, led the NEWMAC with 12.6 assists per game. She is the Coast Guard Academy all-time leader with 4,027 career assists. Rostowfske also earned a spot on the first team for the first time in her career.

Volleyball - Bears Choosen as Top Seed in NCAA Regional

Coast Guard will be the top-seed in the NCAA New England Regional
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/6/06)--The Coast Guard Academy volleyball team which won its first New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament will be the top-seed at the NCAA Division III volleyball regional hosted by MIT.

The Bears have won a school-record 19 straight and are 23-2 overall, after beating Springfield 3-1 in the NEWMAC tournament championship game. The Bears make their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since the 1997 season. Coast Guard competed in the NCAA Tournament in 1995, 1996 and 1997 receiving at-large berths in each of those seasons. This is the first year the Bears earned an automatic bid.

Coast Guard will open the tournament on Thursday at 3:30 vs. eighth-seeded Mount Ida, the champion from the North Atlantic Conference (NAC). The Mustangs were a perfect 10-0 in the NAC and have an overall record of 21-9 after beating Lasell 3-2 in the NAC Tournament championship game. Mount Ida has won eight straight.

Volleyball - Third Time Is a Charm; Bears Capture NEWMAC Championship

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/4/06)--Sophomore Nicole Gurr had 24 kills while junior co-captain Corinne McCormack had 18 kills and 19 digs as top-seeded Coast Guard, after dropping the first game, won three straight to capture its first ever New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament championship with a 3-1 win (27-30, 30-22, 30-20, 30-19) over third-seeded Springfield. Coast Guard gets the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Bears first trip since the 1997 season.

Springfield (27-8) scored the final three points in game one to take the opening game 30-27.

Coast Guard led 24-20 in game two and scored five straight before winning the game 30-22.
