Volleyball - Bears Capture WestConn Invitational

Keriann Mason earned MVP honors as Coast Guard won the WestConn Invitational.
DANBURY, CONN.--(9/5/09)--Tournament MVP freshman Kariann Mason had 28 kills, 52 digs and five aces on Saturday as Coast Guard beat WNEC and Johnson and Wales to capture the WestConn Invitational with a perfect 3-0 record and improve to 4-0 on the season.

Freshman Karen Matic, who earned a spot on the All-tournament team, led the Bears with 76 assists in the two wins.

The Bears started the day by beating WNEC 3-1 (25-13, 25-14, 25-27, 25-21) as junior Jessica Anderson led the way with 26 digs and freshman Catherine Walker added eight kills in the win.

Volleyball - Bloch Leads Bears at WestConn Invite

Lauren Bloch led the way with nine kills and 19 digs as the Bears improved to 2-0 on the young season.
DANBURY, CONN.--(9/4/09)--Freshman Lauren Bloch had a team-high nine kills along with two blocks and 19 digs leading Coast Guard to a 3-0 win over Western Connecticut in the opening round of the WestConn Invitational. The Bears won 25-18, 26-24 and 25-14.

Freshman Karen Matic controlled the action at the net, distributing 27 assists while registering four aces for the Bears, who improved to 2-0, while sophomore Nicole Johnson added eight kills for the winners.

Also for the Bears, junior Jessica Anderson had a team-high 20 digs.

Volleyball - Bears Beat Gordon in Season Opener

Nicole Johnson led the way with 13 kills and five aces.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(9/1/09)--Sophomore Nicole Johnson had 13 kills and five aces leading Coast Guard to a 3-0 win (25-8, 25-14, 25-10) over Gordon in the season opener for both teams.

Coast Guard cruised to a 25-8 win in game one. In game two, freshman Keriann Mason served eight straight points as the Bears took a 20-8 lead and won 25-14.

In the third and final game, Johnson served five straight points turning a 6-6 tie into an 11-6 advantage and Coast Guard outscored Gordon 13-2 to close out the game 25-10.

Mason finished with six kills and 11 digs, junior Jessica Anderson led the Bears with 14 digs while freshman Lauren Bloch had four kills and nine digs.

Freshman Karen Matic led Coast Guard with 30 assists.

2009 Season Preview - Bears Have New Look and New Attitude

Sophomore Nicole Johnson is the only returner that had more than 10 kills last season.
There will be not only be a new look, but a new attitude as half of Coast Guard’s roster is freshmen and not one player remains from the team that advanced to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament in 2006.

The Bears return just one player, who had more than 10 kills last season, sophomore outside hitter Nicole Johnson, but bring in a talented group of eight freshman, four of which are expected to start.

Johnson had a solid freshman season with 171 kills and will look to build upon that this season.

Coast Guard must replace All-America Nicole Gurr, the Bears all-time leader with 1,815 kills.
