Volleyball - Bears Win NEWMAC Opener; Beat WPI

Courtney Wolf had eight kills and four blocks as the Bears won their third straight.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(9/16/08)--Senior Nicole Gurr had 15 kills and six aces while junior Courtney Wolf added eight kills and four blocks as Coast Guard won its third straight beating WPI 3-0 (25-23, 25-10, 25-13) in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams.

WPI (3-6, 0-1) outscored Coast Guard 9-2 breaking a 9-9 tie in the first set to take an 18-11 lead. The Bears, still trailing 20-15, scored five of the next six points to pull to within 21-20. The Bears, trailing 22-20, scored five of the next six points to win the set. Coast Guard took the lead at 24-23 on a Gurr kill, its first lead since 6-5.

Volleyball - Bears Win Second Straight Beat MMA

Nicole Gurr had 12 kills as the Bears beat Merchant Marine 3-0.
KINGS POINT, N.Y.--(9/13/08)--Senior Nicole Gurr had 12 kills, six digs and three blocks as Coast Guard cruised to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-11, 25-14) win over host Merchant Marine in a non-conference match.

Gurr moved into second place on the Bears' all-time career kills list as she moved past her teammate from last season Corinne McCormack. Gurr now has 1,532 kills while McCormack is third with 1,528 career kills.

Sophomore Heather Watka had seven digs and two kills while sophomore Ashley Bullard had nine assists for the Bears won won their second straight match.

Jenna Palaschak led USMMA (3-2) with 12 assists and five digs while junior co-captain Jesselyn LaValley helped out with nine digs, six kills, three blocks and one assist.
 
Volleyball - Bears Register First Win of Season; Beat WNEC 3-1

Senior Nicole Gurr had game-high 18 kills as the Bears beat WNEC 3-1.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(9/10/08)--Senior Nicole Gurr had a game-high 18 kills including a perfect 6 for 6 in the final set as Coast Guard snapped its six-match losing streak and posted its first win of the season beating Western New England College 3-1 (18-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-11) in a non-conference game.

WNEC jumped out to a 13-5 lead in set one and Coast Guard only got as close as five on two separate occasions, the last time at 22-17, before the Golden Bears won the opener 25-18.

Coast Guard (1-6) scored eight straight points, with junior Carin Sweeney serving, to take an 11-4 lead in set two before winning 25-15.

Volleyball - Bears Drop Two at NEWMAC/NESCAC Challenge
MIDDLETOWN, CONN.--(9/6/08)--Coast Guard is still searching for its first win of the season as the Bears dropped a pair of matches at the NEWMAC/NESCAC Challenge at Wesleyan.

The host Cardinals beat Coast Guard 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-23) in the first match of the day. Senior Nicole Gurr led the Bears with seven kills while senior Mary Bitzer added six kills. Junior Carin Sweeney and freshman Jessica Anderson each had seven digs in the loss.

Williams beat the Bears 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-19) in the second match to drop Coast Guard to 0-6 on the season. Gurr had a match-high 13 kills and seven digs while Bitzer added eight kills. Junior Courtney Wolf had five kills and three blocks, Sweeney added 12 digs and sophomore Ashley Bullard added 17 assists for the Bears.
