Volleyball - DePorto Named NEWMAC Rookie of Year; Four Earn All-Conference

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/9/10)--Coast Guard Academy freshman middle hitter Kelsey DePorto was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Volleyball Rookie of the Year and a member of the All-conference first team while the Bears had four players named to the All-conference team in voting by ten head coaches in the NEWMAC.

DePorto was joined by sophomores Lauren Bloch and Karen Matic on the first team while sophomore outside hitter Catherine Walker was named to the second team. All four athletes earn All-conference honors for the first time in their careers.

DePorto leads the Bears with 303 kills, a .349 hitting percentage and 134 blocks this season while Bloch, the Most Outstanding Player in the NEWMAC Tournament and the Bears right side hitter, is second on the team with 264 kills and third with 320 digs.

Volleyball - Bears Heading to New York for NCAA Tournament

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/8/10)--Coast Guard which won its second New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championship on Sunday has earned the third seed in the NCAA Division III New York regional.

The Bears, making their fifth NCAA tournament appearance will take on sixth-seeded Roger Williams, making their second NCAA appearance, in the opening match of the regional on Friday at 12:30 p.m.

Coast Guard, which has won 18 of its last 19 matches, beat Roger Williams 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-22) at home on Oct. 16th during the regular season. Both teams are 29-5 overall. Coast Guard has not won 30 games since winning a school-record 36 in 1995.

Roger Williams is making its second straight trip to the NCAA tournament after winning The Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament for the second straight season. The 29 wins for the Hawks marks the most in the team’s history since 1984 when they won a school-record 30 matches.

Volleyball - BEARS WIN NEWMAC CHAMPIONSHIP

Coast Guard upset top-seeded Springfield to win its second NEWMAC championship.
SPRINGFIELD, MASS.--(11/7/10)--Tournament Most Outstanding Player sophomore Lauren Bloch had 19 kills and 12 digs as second-seeded Coast Guard upset top-seeded Springfield 3-1 to win the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.

Coast Guard, which won by game scores of (14-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-21) improves to 29-5 overall and wins its second NEWMAC tournament championship as the Bears won it in 2006, also beating Springfield.

The Bears, who have won 18 of their last 19 matches, will find out who and where they play when the NCAA releases the tournament bracket on Monday morning at 11:30 a.m.

Coast Guard will be making its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2006 when the Bears advanced all the way to the Elite 8.

Volleyball - Watch NEWMAC Championship Game Live Today

Senior Jessica Anderson and the Bears play for the NEWMAC Championship today at 1 p.m.
Second-seeded Coast Guard will take on top-seed and host Springfield today at 1 p.m. in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament championship game. The winner gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.

Coast Guard is 28-5 overall and the Bears went 8-1 in conference play with their only loss coming to Springfield.

Coast Guard is playing in its first NEWMAC Championship game since 2006 when the Bears beat Springfield and advanced all the way to the Elite 8.

The Bears are making their fourth appearance in the NEWMAC Championship game. Coast Guard lost in 2004 and 2005.
