2008 Season Review - Much Improved Bears Show Promise in 2008

Katie Kurek earned All-conference honors and a spot in the NEWISA Senior Bowl.
After winning just one game in the 2007 season, the 2008 Coast Guard women’s soccer team was greatly improved as the posted five wins finished 5-11 overall and 1-8 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).

The Bears were competitive game in and game out, infact, five of the teams 11 loses were by a single goal.

The season began with back-to-back wins over Mitchell (6-0) and Lasell (2-1). After eight games the team was 4-4 after beating Mass. Maritime (4-0) and Albertus Magnus (3-1).

Coast Guard snapped a 23-game losing streak in NEWMAC play with a 3-2 win over Smith, however, that would be there only win in the final eight games of the season.

Women's Soccer - Kurek Selected for NEWISA Senior Bowl

Katie Kurek was named to the Senior Bowl after scoring 12 goals this season.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/21/08)--Coast Guard Academy senior forward Katie Kurek has been selected to play in the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) Senior Bowl on Dec. 7th at Salem State College at 11 a.m.

Kurek led Coast Guard with 12 goals, one shy of the single-season school record, while also leading the team with 26 points. She was named to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-conference first team, the first Coast Guard player to earn All-conference honors since the 2004 season.

The Bears finished 5-11 on the season after winning just one game in 2007.

Jen Brockway was one of two women's players honored by the NEWMAC.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/12/08)--Coast Guard placed three student-athletes on the 2008 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Academic soccer teams.

Senior Meaghan Gies (Marine and Enviromental Sciences) and sophomore Jen Brockway (Marine and Enviromental Sciences) were named from the women’s team while sophomore Tom Harner (Operations Research and Computer Analysis) earned a spot on the men’s team.

Women's Soccer - Kurek Named to All-Conference team

Katie Kurek earned All-conference honors for the first time in her career.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/11/08)--Coast Guard junior forward Katie Kurek was selected to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-conference second team in voting by the league’s 10 head coaches.

She is the first Coast Guard player since Hillary Allegretti in 2004 to earn All-conference honors.

Kurek led Coast Guard with 12 goals, one shy of the single-season school record, while also leading the team with 26 points.
