Football - Resch Record Day Earns NEFC Co-Offensive Honors

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/2/09)--Freshman quarterback Jon Resch came off the bench on Saturday in a historical performance earning him New England Football Conference (NEFC) Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors.

In a 76-49 loss to Maine Maritime, a game which featured 1,330 yards of total offense and a NEFC record 125 points, Resch came in for the injured Jesse Karr in the first quarter and proceeded to set a school record with 469 yards passing and six touchdowns. Resch tied a school-record with 34 completions on 46 attempts with one interception. The Bears also set a single-game record with 482 passing yards.

Football - Bears and Records Fall in Historical Shootout

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(10/31/09)--Maine Maritime set an NCAA Division II/III record with 730 rushing yards and scored a New England Football Conference (NEFC) record 76 points as the Mariners beat Coast Guard 76-49 in a NEFC Bogan Division shootout.

The Mariners carried 63 times in the record breaking performance falling short of the NCAA All-divisions record of 768 yards (72 carries) set by the Oklahoma Sooners vs. Kansas State in 1988.

Coast Guard set some records of its own as freshman quarterback Jon Resch came off the bench to set school record with 469 yards passing and six touchdowns. Resch tied a school-record with 34 completions on 46 attempts with one interception. The Bears also set a single-game record with 482 passing yards.

The old Coast Guard school records were 412 passing yards set by Jeff Hagan in 1985 vs. Trinity which was also the team record for passing yards in game. Four different quarterbacks had thrown four touchdowns in a game to share the record coming into the day. The record of 34 completions is now also held by Hagan in that in 1985 game vs. Trinity.

Game # 8 Preview - Bears Battle First Place Maine Maritime

THE SERIES: Coast Guard leads 4-2.

LAST YEAR: Junior running back Steve Arguelles tied a school-record with three touchdown catches, the first three of his career, all in the third quarter, and he scored four times on the afternoon, but Coast Guard lost 42-34 at Maine Maritime in a NEFC Bogan Division game.

Maine Maritime junior running back Jim Bower ran for a game high 131 yards on 30 carries and scored a touchdown.

The Bears led 24-14 lead in the third quarter before the Mariners answered the call scoring the next two touchdowns and regaining the lead at 26-24. Coast Guard scored a minute and a half later when Pierson (28 rushes for 116 yards) connected with Arguelles from 14 yards out giving the Bears the 31-26 lead going into the fourth quarter.

MMA opened up the fourth with a Jon Farrin run from nine yards out and capped the drive off with a Matthew Rende two-point conversion giving MMA the 34-31 lead.

Football - Bears Comeback to Win 300th All-Time Game

Eric Gerken's 52-yard touchdown reception was the difference leading the Bears to a 17-14 win.
WORCESTER, MASS.--(10/24/09)--Junior quarterback Jesse Karr threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver Eric Gerken on the first play of the fourth quarter leading Coast Guard to a come-from-behind 17-14 win over Worcester State in a New England Football Conference (NEFC) Bogan Division game, the 300th win in the 86-year history of Coast Guard Academy football.

Coast Guard is now 3-4 overall and 3-2 in the Bogan Division while the Lancers fall to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in division play. The Bears are 5-0 against WSC since the series started in 1995.

Also on Saturday, Westfield State upset Bridgewater State 28-19, putting Coast Guard back in the race for the Bogan Division championship.

After the teams traded their opening possessions, Coast Guard started on their own 15 and manufactured a sophomore Jacob Shackleford 35-yard field goal with 2:33 left in the first quarter. The drive that took over six minutes off the clock was highlighted by three-headed rushing attack of Jesse Karr along with sophomore running backs Ryan Webster and senior Steve Arguelles who ran for 58 yards on the ground in the drive.
