NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/9/09)--Coast Guard Academy junior strong safety Chris Costello intercepted a career-high three passes in the Bears 20-13 season ending victory at Framingham State on Saturday to earn New England Football Conference (NEFC) Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Costello had an interception in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters, the final one coming with 2:33 left in the game at the Coast Guard 30-yard line. He also had another pass breakup and three tackles.

Chris Costello had a huge game with three interceptions to lead the Bears past Framingham State.
FRAMINGHAM, MASS.--(11/7/09)--Junior defensive back Chris Costello intercepted three passes to help lead the Coast Guard Academy Bears to a 20-13 New England Football Conference (NEFC) Bogan Division win over the Framingham State Rams at Maple Street Field in the season finally for both teams.

With the win the Bears improve to 4-5 overall and 4-3 in the division, while the loss drops the Rams to 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the Bogan.

The Rams match their record from last season when they also went 5-5 and it is the first time the Rams finished .500 or better in back to back season since the 1978 and 1979 seasons when they finished 5-4 and 6-3.

The Rams picked up 423 yards of total offense in the game compared to just 266 for the Bears. Framingham State held the advantage in both passing yards, 251 to 212, and rushing yardage, 172 to 54, but was hurt in the end by five turnovers and 15 penalties that cost them 95 yards.

Football - Schmid Named to Academic All-District team

Ryan Schmid earned first team All-Academic honors from CoSIDA.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/6/09)--Coast Guard Academy junior defensive lineman Ryan Schmid has been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine District I All-Academic College Division first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Schmid, who has a 3.8 GPA in Marine and Environmental Sciences is a starting defensive end and has 39 tackles, 29 solo and three for loss. He is a member of the International Council, Ski Club and the Toastmaster’s Club. Schmid has been on the Dean’s List all four semesters and he was named to the New England Football Conference All-Academic Team and the Commandant of Cadets List last year.

The Bears (3-5, 3-3) close the season this week at Framingham State.

Football - Jon Resch Wins Gold Helmet

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/4/09)--Freshman backup quarterback Jon Resch became just the second Coast Guard player since 1988 to win the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Division II/III Gold Helmet Award, as he was presented the award at the New England Football Writers luncheon at Harvard University on Wednesday.

Resch, who had just one completion on the season coming into the game, came off the bench on Saturday in a historical performance earning him New England Football Conference (NEFC) Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors.

In a 76-49 loss to Maine Maritime, a game which featured 1,330 yards of total offense and a NEFC record 125 points, Resch came in for the injured Jesse Karr in the first quarter and proceeded to set a school record with 469 yards passing and six touchdowns. Resch tied a school-record with 34 completions on 46 attempts with one interception. The Bears also set a single-game record with 482 passing yards.
