 Pat Bennett returned the opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown and the Bears won the Secretaries' Cup. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(9/11/10)--Senior Pat Bennett, who missed all of last season, returned to the field in style as he returned the opening kickoff 82 yards and later blocked a field goal as Coast Guard held off Merchant Marine 10-8 to win the Secretaries’ Cup in front of a capacity crowd in the Bears’ season opener.

Coast Guard had a 10-0 lead entering the fourth quarter before Merchant Marine (1-1) got a safety on a bad Coast Guard snap with 12:09 left in the game and then scored on a 22-yard touchdown pass from senior Derrick Ventre (16 of 44, 137 yards, 1 TD, 3 INT) to freshman Chaise Dunn with 51 seconds left.
Ventre’s two-point conversion pass was broken up by junior Chris Izurieta to give the Bears the Secretaries’ Cup for the first time since 2007.
Coast Guard (1-0) took advantage of a Merchant Marine miscue as a Coast Guard punt went off a Mariner player and was recovered by senior Sam Beauchamp at the Merchant Marine 25-yard line. Junior Jacob Shackleford would kick a 39-yard field goal with 1:34 left in the first quarter for a 10-0 lead. |

 Coast Guard will open the season on the ninth anniversary of 9/11. MERCHANT MARINE (1-0) AT COAST GUARD (0-0)

THE SERIES: Merchant Marine leads 26-12.
LAST YEAR: Coast Guard tied the game 24-24 with 1:29 left in regulation on an 18-yard touchdown pass from junior Jesse Karr to senior Steve Arguelles and a two-point conversion run by Karr, but missed a 42-yard field with five seconds left in regulation and lost its season opener to Merchant Marine 33-27 in double overtime in the annual battle for the Secretaries’ Cup.
Karr, playing in his first collegiate game, was outstanding as he completed 29 of 52 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns.
He becomes just the fifth Coast Guard player in the past 18 years to throw for over 300 yards and the first since Niles Pierson threw for 346 yards vs. Curry in the 2006 NEFC Championship Game. Karr was the first Coast Guard player to throw for over 300 yards in a regular season game since Cory Anderson threw for 376 yards vs. St. Lawrence in 2004.
Arguelles carried 16 times for 100 yards while also leading the Bears with nine receptions for 48 yards. Senior Cale Cooper had five receptions for a career-high 125 yards and a touchdown.
This game marked the longest game in Coast Guard history, the Bears had played three single overtime games.

 Jarrod Owens is battling for the starting quarterback spot after missing last season with an injury. What a difference a year makes. Last season, entering the year the Bears had no quarterbacks on the active roster that had played in a collegiate game. This season, there are three talented signal callers that have already proven themselves and that will set the stage for what should be an exciting battle for the starting spot as head coach Bill George welcomes back 14 starters, four on offense, eight on defense, the punter and the kicker.
Senior tri-captain Jesse Karr, who started eight games, but missed most of the final three games a year ago with an injury, was 141 of 264 for 1,640 yards and 13 touchdowns last season to earn New England Football Conference (NEFC) second team honor. He became the first Coast Guard quarterback to throw for over 300 yards twice in a career a he threw for 338 yards in his collegiate debut vs. Merchant Marine and also threw for 335 yards in a loss to Fitchburg State.
Sophomore Jon Resch was tremendous late last season. He won the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Division II/III Gold Helmet when he came off the bench for the injured Karr against Maine Maritime and broke the school records for yards (469) and touchdowns (6) while tying the school record for completions in a game (34). Resch was 47 of 73 for 712 yards and eight touchdowns while also starting the final game of the season at Framingham State. |

 Jesse Karr is locked in a three-way battle for the starting quarterback spot this season. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(8/24/10)--Coast Guard has been picked to finish fifth in the Bogan Division in the New England Football Conference (NEFC) Pre-Season Coaches Poll.
The Bears were 4-5 overall and 4-3 in the division last season, finishing fourth.
Last year, Coast Guard didn’t have a quarterback that had taken a collegiate snap heading into the season while this year, the Bears return three talented signal callers that have already proven themselves.
