Football - Schmid Wins Swede Nelson Award

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(12/17/10)--Coast Guard Academy senior defensive lineman Ryan Schmid has been named the winner of the the 65th annual Nils V. “Swede” Nelson Award for exceptional achievement in sportsmanship, academics, and athletics given by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston.

The Nils V. “Swede” Nelson Award, inaugurated in 1946, recognizes football players who also distinguish themselves in the classroom. Schmid is just the second Coast Guard player to win the prestigious award.

Offensive lineman Anthony Castonzo of Boston College won the award for the Bowl/Championship Divisions and Schmid won the in Division II/III award.

Schmid, who was also an ESPN Academic All-America College Division Football first team selection, started all nine games this year and led the team with nine tackles for loss and four sacks while recording 40 tackles, 26 solo to earn second team All-conference honors.

Schmid, who has a 3.68 GPA as a Marine and Environmental Sciences major, is a member of the International Council, Ski Club and the Toastmasters Club. He has been on the Dean's List all six semesters and a was named to the New England Football Conference All-Academic team and the Commandant of Cadets List for the past two years.

Football - Schmid Named Academic All-American by CoSIDA

Ryan Schmid became the first Coast Guard football player in 29 years to earn Academic All-America honors.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/23/10)--Coast Guard Academy senior defensive lineman Ryan Schmid has been named to the ESPN Academic All-America College Division Football first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Schmid becomes just the third Coast Guard Academy football player to earn first team Academic All-America honors and the first since 1981 when defensive back Mark Butt earned first team honors. Bruce Melnick also earned first team honors for the Bears as a defensive back in 1971.

He is the fifth Coast Guard athlete to ever earn first team Academic All-America honors. Lis Bosma was a first team selection in basketball in 2004 while Steve Blum earned first team honors in men’s track in 2008.

Ryan, a team captain this year, was a CoSIDA/ESPN District I All-Academic College Division first team selection for the second straight season. He started all nine games this year and led the team with nine tackles for loss and four sacks while recording 40 tackles, 26 solo to earn second team All-conference honors.

Football - Bears Place Six on All-Bogan Division team

Pat Bennett was named to the All-NEFC Bogan Division team as a defensive back and a return specialist.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/11/10)--Coast Guard senior Pat Bennett was named a New England Football Conference (NEFC) Bogan Division first team defensive back and a second team return specialist as the Bears had six players earn All-division honors.

Bennett, who sat out last season, earns All-Bogan Division honors for the third time. He was a second team selection in 2007 and a first team selection in 2008. He had 55 tackles, 37 solo with one interception while leading the team with three blocked kicks and seven pass breakups. Bennett had 15 kickoff returns for 283 yards including an 82-yard touchdown on the opening kickoff of the season leading Coast Guard to a 10-8 win over Merchant Marine. He led the team with an 18.9 yard kick return average.

Senior linebacker Kyle Ennis and sophomore wide receiver Eric Gerken were also named to the first team while junior defensive back Chris Izurieta and senior defensive linemen Nick Greaver and Ryan Schmid were all named to the second team.

Football - Bears Lose Shootout in Season Finale

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/6/10)--Maine Maritime rushed for 619 yards led by 218 yards and four touchdowns by senior Jim Bower as the Mariners won their third straight New England Football Conference (NEFC) Bogan Division championship by beating Coast Guard in a shootout 63-47.

The game featured eight touchdowns in the fourth quarter, five by Coast Guard and 1,217 yards of total offense much like the game last season that was won by Maine Maritime 76-49 and had 1,230 yards of total offense.

The Mariners finished with 668 total yards, 619 rushing and 49 passing while Coast Guard finished with 549 total yards, 263 rushing and 286 passing, all three season highs for the Bears.

Maine Maritime improves to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the Bogan Division and will host the NEFC Championship game next weekend. Coast Guard lost its fifth straight to finish 2-7 overall and 1-6 in the division.
