Men's Cross Country - Bears Dominate in Season Opening Win

Mike Haas placed third as the Bears took the top seven spots to win the Smith Invitational.
NORTHAMPTON, MASS.--(9/13/08)--Coast Guard dominated the field as the Bears took the top seven spots to win the season opening 13 team Smith Invitational.

Senior Mike Persun won the race with a time of 16:32.82, sophomore Nate Crum (16:46.78), senior Mike Haas (16:52.25), senior Pat Fernandez (16:59.89) and freshman Trevor Siperek (17:07.20) rounded out the top five.

Senior Kevin Sorrel (17:15.41) was sixth, sophomore Andrew Price (17:18.31) was seventh while senior Zach Henninghausen placed ninth (17:23.02).

Coast Guard finished with 15 points, the best possible score, while Westfield State was a distant second with 55 points.

Senior co-captain Mike Persun is back to lead a veteran group in 2008.
Coast Guard returns five of its top seven runners from last season’s team which placed second for the tenth straight season at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship.

Senior co-captains Mike Persun (3rd at NEWMAC Championship) and Zach Hennighausen (13th at NEWMAC), who both earned All-conference honors last season, are back to lead the way in 2008.

Steve Eldridge, who enters his 40th season as head coach, is exicited about his veteran team, in which six of its top nine runners in time trials are seniors.

Men's Cross Country - Bears Place 11th at ECAC Championship
WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS.--(11/3/07)--Junior Matt Eyler was the top Coast Guard finisher as he placed 38th overall leading the Bears to an 11th place finish of the 37 teams at the ECAC Division III Championships at Williams College.

Eyler had a time of 27:40 over 8,000 meter course.

Men's Cross Country - Bears Place Five on NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(10/31/07)--The Coast Guard Academy placed five student athletes on the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country Academic All-conference team.

Seniors Matt Eyler (Electrical Engineering), Josh Gaidos (Electrical Engineering) and Matt Romano (Civil Engineering) joined sophomores Noah Hudson (Government) and Adam Stanek (Management) on the Academic All-conference team.
