 Melissa Martinelli moved into second place on the Bears all-time scoring and rebounding list. MIDDLETOWN, CONN.--(12/7/09)--Melissa Martinelli moved into second place on the Bears’ all-time scoring and rebounding list as she finished with a team-high 21 points and seven rebounds, but Wesleyan used a 17-2 first half run leading the Cardinals to a 60-43 win over Coast Guard in a non-conference game between the two Connecticut schools.
Martinelli now has 1,464 points and 734 rebounds passing Lis Bosma (’05), who had 1,444 points and Ann Leu (’89) who had 733 career rebounds.
Wesleyan (3-2) led 26-14 at halftime and scored the first nine points of the second half to take a commanding 35-14 lead with 18:17 left in the game.
Coast Guard (2-3) would score seven straight cutting the deficit to 37-23 with 15:33 left, but that would be as close as the Bears would get the rest of the way as Wesleyan responded by scoring eight of the next nine points for a 45-24 lead with 12:20 left. |

 Nick Poehler won a pair of events to lead the Bears past Conn. College. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(12/5/09)--Nick Poehler and Matt Odom each won a pair of events as Coast Guard remained unbeaten with a 201-96 win over host and neighboring rival Connecticut College.
Nick Poehler won the 500 freestyle (4:53.10) and the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:57.20 while Odom won the 100 breaststroke (58.93) and the 200 IM (2:00.64).
Also for the Bears, Brian McGuiness won the 200 freestyle (1:47.31), Dan Alley won the 200 butterfly (2:01.40), Johnson Knox won the 50 freestyle (21.68) and Mike Carman won the 200 breaststroke improving his NCAA B cut time with a winning time of 2:07.22.

 Sabrina Taylor had a season-high 15 points as the Bears won the conference opener. CAMBRIDGE, MASS.--(12/2/09)--Melissa Martinelli led all scorers with 18 points while Sabrina Taylor had 12 of her season-high 15 points in the second half leading Coast Guard to a 47-38 come-from-behind win over MIT in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season opener for both teams.
MIT (2-4, 0-1), which had its two-game win streak snapped, came out red hot knocking down four 3-pointers in the first eight minutes to take a 16-7 lead. The Engineers, who were just nine of 48 from 3-point range in the first five games of the season, would not make another 3-pointer in the game finishing four for 17 behind the arc.
Coast Guard (2-1, 1-0) responded with six straight cutting the deficit to 16-13 following a basket by Karli Collins with 8:31 left in the first half. |

Coast Guard won the The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Play of the Year.

The US Coast Guard Academy volleyball team won the weekly award in week two of the Volleyball Market/AVCA Play of the Week. The Bears earned the honor after beating out four other semifinalists – Dakota Wesleyan University, University of Hawai’i, University of North Florida and Tulane University – during a week-long voting period.
The award-winning play came during Coast Guard’s home match-up with New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Wellesley College on September 22, a match in which the Bears won 3-0. The play features several exhilarating dives to the floor by the Coast Guard players and is capped with a Bears’ stuffed block to earn the point during the 35 second rally. The victory extended Coast Guard’s home win-streak to 23 consecutive matches and allowed the team to remain unbeaten on the year at 9-0. |
