Baseball - Bears Snap Seven-Game Slide; Beat Albertus

Kevin Thomas struck out a career-high eight to pick up his second win of the season.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/30/08)--Steve Lewis scored the game winning run on a dropped pop up as Coast Guard scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to snap a seven-game losing streak and beat Albertus Magnus 4-3 in a game called in the fifth inning due to rain.

Bill Birch led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, he stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielders choice by Lewis to tie the game. Ken Franklin’s single put Lewis on third before Brian Lisko’s pop up was dropped to end the game which was played in constant rain from the first pitch.

Franklin gave Coast Guard (5-11) a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first before Albertus tied the game in the second on an RBI double by Kyle Calechman.

Women's Crew - Varsity Eight Wins Season Opener
WORCESTER, MASS.--(3/29/08)--The Coast Guard Academy women's rowing team opened their season with strong performances in wintry conditions on Lake Quinsigamond.

Competing against Divison I Holy Cross and Divison III Wesleyan University and Mt. Holyoke, the Bears women's varsity 8 (ranked #8 in the CRCA/NCAA Division III polls) started off the day of racing finishing three seconds ahead of Holy Cross in a time of 6:48.0 while beating Mt. Holyoke (#7) and Wesleyan (#12) by 13 and 30 seconds respectively.

Off the line, the Bears were second with a conservative start but quickly found their rhythm and pulled level with the leader, Holy Cross, by the 1000m mark. During the second half of the race, CGA established themselves as the leader and extended their lead while maintaining a stroke rate under the rest of the field. The Varsity 8 was comprised of Tenley Barna (Sr), Adriana Knies (Sr), Maggie Ward (Jr), Emily Holt (Sr), Lauren Milici (Jr), Kate Dacimo (Fr), Sarah Jane Otey (Fr), Sarah Southard (Sr), and Rory Keegan (Jr).

Softball - Bears Rally to Sweep WPI

Colleen Denny's RBI single capped a three run, two-out rally in the opener.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/29/08)--Colleen Denny’s RBI single capped a two-out seventh inning rally as Coast Guard scored five runs in the final two innings to turn a 4-0 deficit into a 5-4 win in the opener while in game two, Courtney Wolf’s RBI single in the top of the seventh inning snapped a 5-5 tie as the Bears swept WPI 5-4 and 6-5 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader in which Coast Guard played at home, but was the visiting team because WPI’s field was unplayable.

In the opener, Coast Guard trailed 4-0 in the sixth before an RBI single by Denny and an RBI ground out by Emily Paxson, cut the deficit in half.

In the seventh inning the first two batters made outs and Coast Guard was down to its final out. Amanda Frederick singled, Carin Sweeney followed with an RBI double, Wolf tied the game on an RBI single before Denny gave the Bears the lead with an RBI single.

Men's Soccer - Villa Selected for Senior All-Star Game

Martin Villa will play in the NEISL Senior All-Star game on May 3rd.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/27/08)--Coast Guard Academy senior defender Martin Villa has been selected to play in the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League (NEISL) Senior All-Star Game at Clark University on May 3rd at 3 p.m.

Villa, a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) first team selection, had one goal and two assists. He was the backbone of a Coast Guard defense which allowed just one goal per game this season.

The Bears finished 9-7-1 and earned a berth to the ECAC New England Division III tournament for the fourth time in five years.
