Women's Indoor Track - Bishop Breaks Own Record

Abby Bishop placed 10th in the pentathlon.
CAMBRIDGE, MASS.--(2/18/11)--Freshman Abby Bishop finished 10th overall in the Pentathlon at the Division III New England Championships at MIT scoring 2706 points.

Bishop's total score broke her own record of 2516 points set two weeks ago at the Tufts Invitational.

Abby's performances included 9.45 seconds in the 55 hurdles, 23 feet, 1.75 inches in the shot put, 4 feet, 6.25 inches in the high jump, 16 feet, 1.5 inches in the long jump.
 
Women's Basketball - Bears Snap Losing Streak; Win 48-36

Alexa Hunko scored eight straight points in the second half to put the game away.
SOUTH HADLEY, MASS.--(2/16/11)--Freshman Larla Brown led all scorers with 20 points while classmate Alexa Hunko scored eight straight points during a key stretch in the second half as Coast Guard snapped an 18-game losing streak and won its first conference game of the season with a 48-36 win over Mount Holyoke in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Brown finished nine of 15 from the floor for 20 points to go with a game-high five assists. Freshman Kaitlin Ward had a double-double with 11 points, hitting three of four from 3-point range, and 11 rebounds while Hunko added ten points for the Bears, who are now 3-20 overall and 1-16 in the league. Mount Holyoke, which never led in the game, drops to 7-16 overall and 5-12 in NEWMAC play.

Coast Guard took its largest lead of the game 28-11 following a basket by Brown just 15 seconds into the second half.

Football - Bears Place 22 on NEFC All-Academic Team

Paul Junghans earned All-Academic honors for the third straight season.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(2/16/11)--Coast Guard Academy placed 22 student-athletes on the 2010 New England Football Conference (NEFC) All-Academic team announced on Wednesday.

The 22 student-athletes named to the team were the most Coast Guard has placed on the NEFC All-Academic team and the total was third most of the 14 schools this year trailing only MIT with 28 and Plymouth State with 24.

Six seniors were named to the team led by Academic All-American defensive lineman Ryan Schmid (Marine and Environmental Sciences), quarterback Jesse Karr (Operations Research and Computer Analysis) and linebacker Paul Junghans (Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering) who earned a spot on the All-Academic team for the third straight season. Defensive backs Chris Costello (Management) and Jimmy Feeney (Government) along with linebacker Ryan Mullikin (Management) earned All-Academic honors for the first time.

Men's Basketball - Freshmen Lead Bears to Senior Day Win

Devonte Weems had a game-high 17 points to give the seniors a win in their final home game.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(2/12/11)--Coast Guard held MIT without a field goal for the final eight minutes of the game outscoring the Engineers 15-4 in that span enroute to a 62-53 upset win on Senior Day, the final home game of the season, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

MIT took a 49-47 lead on a basket by sophomore Will Tashman with 8:16 left, but that would be the last basket the Engineers would score as they managed just four free throws, all by Tashman, in the final eight minutes of the game.

Coast Guard took the lead for good, 51-50 on a free throw by freshman Kevin Sowers with 6:01 left. Sophomore Jimmy Knudsen and Sowers added back to back buckets to give the Bears a 55-50 lead with 4:53 left.
