Baseball - Bears Sweep Albertus Magnus; Improve to 12-7

James Diddell pitched a complete game to pickup his first career win in the sweep of Albertus Magnus.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/28/11)--Sophomore Nolan Gallagher delivered a game-winning RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth in the opener and classmate James Diddell pitched a complete game scattering four hits and did not allow and earned run to pickup his first collegiate win as Coast Guard swept Albertus Magnus 5-4 in eight innings and 4-1 in a non-conference doubleheader.

Coast Guard has already matched its win total from last season as the Bears improved to 12-7 after going 12-18 last season. Albertus Magnus drops to 3-9 on the season.

In the opener, Albertus took the lead with an unearned run in the top of the fourth before the Bears scored three runs in the home half of the inning. Sophomore Mike Massaro’s RBI single tied the game before Gallagher delivered a two-run triple to give Coast Guard a 3-1 lead.

Baseball - Petty Named NEWMAC Pitcher of the Week

Derek Petty earned NEWMAC Pitcher of the Week honors after throwing a four-hit shutout on Saturday.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/28/11)--Sophomore Derek Petty has been named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week after he shutout Wheaton on Saturday.

Petty fired a four-hit shutout, all singles, while walking just one and striking out nine to beat New England power Wheaton 3-0 in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

The win was Coast Guard’s first against Wheaton since 2007 snapping a ten game slide against the Lyons.

Men's Tennis - Bears Blank MMA; Win Superintendents' Trophy

Greg Mitchell won both his singles and doubles match as the Bears secured the Superintendents' Trophy once again.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/27/11)--Coast Guard won all nine matches to beat rival Merchant Marine 9-0 and secure the Superintendents' Trophy given to the Academy which wins the most sporting events during the academic year.

Coast Guard, which has never lost the Superintendents' Trophy tied last season with Merchant Marine for the first time. The Bears clinched the win as they now lead 7-4 with just two events left this year.

The Bears not drop a set in disposing of the Mariners to improve to 7-3 on the season.

Women's Swimming - Shadwick Completes Trifecta; Earns Third All-America Honor of Week

Kim Shadwick earned All-America honors in all three races she swam at the NCAA Championships this week.
KNOXVILLE, TENN.--(3/26/11)--Senior Kim Shadwick closed out her magnificent career and outstanding week by earning All-America honors for the third time this week, this time in the 1,650 freestyle at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Tennessee.

She totaled 40 points for the Bears in the team scoring and that was good enough to herself have Coast Guard finish 22nd overall at the meet, the best ever finish and most points scored by the Bears at the NCAA Championships. Darby Schlaht scored 37 points for Coast Guard in 2000.

Shadwick broke her own school-record with a time of 17:06.01 in the 1,650 freestyle to finish seventh and earn her third All-America honor of the week. The record she broke was one she set at the NCAA Championship last year she placed 10th with a time of 17:09.23.

She was a perfect 3 for 3 this week earning All-America honors in all three races, the 500 freestyle, the 200 freestyle and finally the 1,650 freestyle, the first three of her career.
