PROVIDENCE, R.I.--(5/14/11)--Second-seeded Coast Guard's NCAA run came to an end in extra innings as fourth-seeded Rhode Island College advanced to the final day of competition with a 2-1, walk-off win in eight innings in game 12 at the Providence Regional of the 2011 NCAA Div. III Softball Championship played at Rhode Island College’s Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth, sophomore second baseman Marisa Jandreau lined a single to right field that was misplayed and allowed her to reach third base. Senior shortstop Donielle Mattoon smacked a grounder to first base that was also booted and allowed Jandreau to trot home with the walk-off game-winning run.

Softball - Illegal Pitches Send Bears to Losers' Bracket

Maddie Buchert had a three-run double to account for the Bears three runs.
PROVIDENCE, R.I.--(5/13/11)--For the second straight game, illegal pitches became the story as sixth-seeded St. Joseph’s (Maine) defeated second-seeded Coast Guard, 4-3, in game eight at the Providence Regional of the 2011 NCAA Div. III Softball Championship played at Rhode Island College’s Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex.

Illegal pitches against Coast Guard junior All-American Hayley Feindel cost the Bears three runs and unlike Thursday, the Bears could not overcome the deficit. Feindel, who was called for just six illegal pitches in 38 regular season games, was called for 23 on Thursday and 12 more on Friday costing the Bears two runs.

The umpires or an NCAA representative were not available for questions regarding the lack of illegal pitches called during the regular season and the enforcement of the rule at the regional.

The Monks (37-8) will face Eastern Connecticut in a battle of the only unbeaten teams left at the regional on Saturday, May 14 (2 p.m.). The Bears (37-3) will face Worcester State in an elimination game tomorrow afternoon at noon.
