(all photos by Tim Tamargo, CGA Public Affairs) On Tuesday, March 2nd, five Coast Guard Academy student athletes took part in the National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America Day which brings to light to Dr. Seuss’ birthday and literacy.
Senior men’s basketball players Aaron Jones and Stefan Lewis, women’s basketball player Melissa Martinelli, football player Tony Borruso and softball player Courtney Wolf read and held question and answer sessions about the Coast Guard, its Academy and athletics with kindergarten, first and second graders at West Vine Street School in Pawcatuck, Conn.
Some of the student’s donned red and white striped hats and all were very excited to interact with the student athletes and learn more about the Coast Guard, its mission and to get to know their special guest readers. |

 Melissa Martinelli, who led the NEWMAC in scoring and rebounding, earned first team honors for the third straight season. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/2/10)--Senior Melissa Martinelli was named to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Basketball All-conference first team in voting by the leagues ten head coaches.
Martinelli led the NEWMAC in scoring (19.4), rebounding (8.5) as well as free throw percentage (.747) and she was fifth in field goal percentage (.481).
She earns first team All-conference honors for the third straight season after being named NEWMAC Rookie of the Year in 2007.
This season, she had 20 or more points in 11 games with seven double-doubles. |

 Andrew Armstrong picked up a pair of honors from the Pilgrim Wrestling League. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/1/10)--Junior Andy Snyder and senior Andrew Armstrong were honored by the Pilgrim Wrestling League.
Snyder, who led the Bears with 25 wins this season, posted a 25-10 record and earned Pilgrim League All-Star second team honors at 157 pounds. Snyder was an honorable mention selection last season.

 Nick Poehler earned NEWMAC Rookie of the Year honors with an outstanding performance this weekend. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/1/10)--Freshman Nick Poehler was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men’s Swimming Rookie of the Year as he posted three NCAA “B” cut times, won the conference championship in the 800 freestyle relay and earned All-conference honors with second place finishes in two other events at the NEWMAC Championships this past weekend.
Poehler teammed with Brian McGuiness, Alex Brown and Eric Schwartz to win the 800 freestyle relay with a school-record and an NCAA “B” cut time of 6:52.26.
He also took took second in the 500 freestyle with an NCAA “B” cut time of 4:38.08 and placed second in the 1,650 freestyle with an NCAA “B” cut time of 16:10.29.
Coast Guard placed second at the meet for the second straight season. The Bears won the NEWMAC Championship three straight years from 2006-2008. |
