Men's Basketball - Marshall, Benedict Lead Bears to OT Win

John Benedict was a perfect 7 for 7 from the field and had a season-high 17 points in the win.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(2/8/12)--Junior Greg Marshall had a game-high 22 points and sophomore John Benedict had a season-high 17 points and did not miss a field goal leading Coast Guard to a 91-81 overtime win over Clark in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Coast Guard snaps a three-game losing streak and keeps its NEWMAC tournament hopes alive with a win improving to 8-12 overall and 2-8 in conference play while Clark drops to 10-11 overall and 3-6 in conference play.

Benedict, who was a perfect seven for seven from the field, made a free throw to open the scoring in overtime before Marshall nailed a three-pointer giving the Bears a 79-75 lead with 4:08 left in the extra session.

Sophomore Kevin Sowers, who finished with 15 points and a game-high five assists, scored a bucket with 55 seconds pushing the lead to 86-80 and the Bears held on for the win.

Wrestling - Bears Top DIII Team at All-Academy Championships

Joel Wyman was the top Coast Guard finisher.
COLORADO SPRINGS, COL.--(2/5/12)--Freshman heavyweight Joel Wyman was the top Coast Guard finisher as he placed fourth at the All-Academy Championships at the Air Force Academy.

Coast Guard placed sixth of the eight teams with 11.5 points and first of the three Division III teams in the double-elimination tournament. The Bears edged rival Merchant Marine, which finished with ten points while Norwich finished with a half point.

Wyman lost his first match 13-3 before pinning his next opponent in 3:28 and then won 6-2 to earn a spot in the third place match where he got pinned and finished fourth.

Three other wrestlers recorded wins for the Bears as Anthony Signorello won a match with a pin in just 23 seconds at 133 pounds, Mike Giorgio won a match at 149 pounds with a 20-3 win and Luke Taylor won a match 17-2 at 165 pounds.
 
Men's Swimming -- Bears Beat Wesleyan in Final Dual Meet

Christian Brindamour had a big day to lead the Bears.
MIDDLETOWN, CONN.--(2/4/12)--Freshman Christian Brindamour won a pair of events and was part of winning relay leading the Bears to a 211-68 win over Wesleyan in the final dual meet of the season.

Brindamour won the 100 backstroke (54.19) and the 100 freestyle (47.96), Orlando Morel won both the one-meter (216.07) and three-meter (213.82) diving events while Marco Tinari won the 500 freestyle (4:49.17) and the 1,000 freestyle (9:57.37) as the Bears finished 10-2 in dual meets this season.

Also for Coast Guard, Brian McGuiness won the 200 freestyle (1:46.08), , Michael Piantedosi won the 100 breaststroke (1:00.72), Tim Early won the 200 butterfly (1:58.68), Johnson Knox won the 50 freestyle (21.88), Kevin Smit won the 200 backstroke (2:02.65) and Preston Strobel won the 100 butterfly (52.79).

Softball - Bears Ranked 15th in NFCA Preseason Poll

Senior All-American Hayley Feindel, the Division III all-time strikeouts leader, is back to lead the Bears once again.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(2/2/12)--Coast Guard is ranked 15th nationally in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III preseason poll.

2012 PRESEASON POLL

The Bears were 38-4 overall and a 15-1 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) last season. Coast Guard won the NEWMAC regular season title for the third straight season while winning its second straight NEWMAC tournament title. The Bears also made their third straight NCAA tournament appearance and finished the season ranked 17th in the final NFCA coaches’ poll.

Senior first team All-American Haley Feindel, the NCAA Division III all-time leader with 1,206 strikeouts is back to lead the Bears once again in 2012. Feindel was a dominant force in the circle last season as she led the nation and set school records for wins (37), strikeouts (457), shutouts (26) and earned-run average (0.56) en route to becoming the first Coast Guard softball player to win first-team All-America accolades by the NFCA.
