 Carin Sweeney earned CoSIDA Academic All-district honors. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/9/08)--Sophomore outfielder Carin Sweeney has been named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Softball Academic All-District I second team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Sweeney, who started 35 games this season, hit .275 and drove in 14 runs. She has a 3.43 GPA as a Civil Engineering major. She led the team with a .980 fielding percentage, making just one error in 51 chances.
A three-sport athlete at the Academy, Sweeney is also a member of both the volleyball and basketball teams. A member of the Dean’s List, she also tutors and counsels cadets that are struggling academically and will serve as a cadre and train the incoming freshman this summer.
District I consists of New England, New York, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. |
 Amanda Frederick, the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, earned second team All-region honors. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/6/08)--Coast Guard Academy freshman Amanda Frederick has been named to the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-New England region second team.
Frederick, who was named New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Rookie of the Year and a first team All-conference selection was named to the second team at the utility spot as she split the season between catcher and shortstop.
The freshman set Coast Guard Academy single-season freshman records with seven home runs and 45 RBI. She led the NEWMAC in triples (5), RBI (45) and slugging percentage (.768) while also leading the team in batting average (.424), doubles (12), homers (7) and runs scored (34). |
WORCESTER, MASS.--(5/4/08)--Coast Guard posted solid times and good performances at the New England Rowing Championships held Saturday and New England Fours Championship held Sunday. The races were held under cloudy skies on Lake Quinsigamond.
The Women’s Novice 8 started off the racing in a fast heat and placed fourth to qualify for the petite finals. In the afternoon, the Bears fought hard through the 2000m course but couldn’t match the speed of Holy Cross and Trinity and finished 3rd in the race and 9th overall. The Novice 8 consisting of Allison Murray (Fr), MaryKate Netrour (Fr), Amy Harrison(Fr), Amanda Cousart (Fr), Gina Guiterrez (Fr), Sara Barrs (Fr), Mia Reizun (Fr), Jenifer Lopez (Fr), and Amy Tow (Fr) will prepare for a rematch this weekend at the ECAC National Invitational.
The Women’s Varsity 8 (4th CRCA/NCAA Division III national poll), posted a solid performance in the heats besting Bates (3rd CRCA/NCAA Division III national poll) and qualifying for the afternoon’s Grand Final. In the Grand Final, a race that featured the top four Division III teams in the nation along with two Division I teams the Bears had some trouble off the start and never quite got their footing, finishing 6th overall. The Bears look to some exciting racing next weekend at the ECAC National Invitational where the top 10 Division III Schools in the country will go head to head. WORCESTER, MASS.--(5/4/08)--Coast Guard showed its depth and overall team speed by placing all four boats into the Grand Finals at the New England Rowing Championships held Sunday under wet conditions at Lake Quinsigamond.
The men’s novice team put in very strong performance in their Grand Final and took third place in a time of 6:21.3. This performance put the CGA novice men in a great position for the upcoming ECAC National Invitational Championship. The Novice 8 included Hilary Grimes (Fr), Nick Greaver (Fr), John Olbrys (Fr), Dave Kent (Fr), Austin King (Fr), Brian Bonomi (Fr), Dave Birdsong (Fr), Corbin (Fr) and Alex Schmidt (Fr). |
