Swimming - Six Individuals and both teams honored by CSCAA

Jim Okorn earned first team Scholar All-America honors.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(7/2/09)--The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) honored both the Coast Guard Academy men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams with team Scholar All-American honors while six individuals were also named Scholar All-Americans.

The men’s team had a GPA of 3.04 while the women’s team had a combined GPA of 3.01 to also make the cut of 3.0 for team honors.

Senior Jim Okorn earned first team honors with a 3.53 GPA. An individual who has over a 3.5 and earns and invite to the NCAA Championship is named to the first team. He earns Scholar All-America honors for the fourth straight season.

Women's Cross Country - Brown Named Head Coach

Ethan Brown takes over the women's cross country team from Leroy Falconi, who served as head coach for the past 26 years.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(6/11/09)--Ethan Brown has been named the head coach of Coast Guard Academy women’s cross country team. He takes over for Leroy Falconi, who was the head coach for the past 26 seasons.

Brown also serves as the top assistant for Coast Guard Academy’s track and field program. He also had brief cross country and track coaching stints at Babson College (2006-2008) and Springfield College (2003-2005) where he coached several athletes to All-American and All-New England accolades.

He holds a Master’s of Education in Sports Management from Springfield College and professional certifications including; Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist from the NSCA and USA Track & Field (USATF) Level I certified coach.

Women's Basketball - Rick Gaines Named Head Coach

Rick Gaines takes over a team that returns four starters next season.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(6/10/09)--Rick Gaines has been named the head coach of the Coast Guard Academy women’s basketball team. Gaines has served as an assistant coach with the program for the past ten seasons.
         
Gaines, a captain in the Coast Guard, is a 1978 graduate of the Academy and was a member of both the tennis and basketball teams. He also served as an assistant coach with the Coast Guard men’s basketball team on three different occasions from 1984-’86, 1987-’89 and from 1990-’92.
         
Captain Gaines is a member of the permanent commissioned teaching staff at the Academy and teaches chemistry in the Science Department. He earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Connecticut in 1998.

Men's Basketball - Barry Retires After 19 Years at Coast Guard

Pete Barry, the all-time winningest basketball coach in school history, won 262 games in 19 years at Coast Guard.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(6/9/09)--Pete Barry, the all-time winningest men’s basketball coach at the Coast Guard Academy, has announced his retirement.

Barry, who coached at the both the high school and college level for a combined 40 years, posted a record of 262-216 (.548) in 19 years as the head coach at the Coast Guard Academy and he finishes his collegiate career with a record of 413-315 (.567) in 27 seasons.

He led the Bears to the greatest season in Academy history in the 2007-2008 season when the team won a school-record 24 games and advanced all the way to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Division III tournament. The Bears won their second straight New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament championship that season after winning the program’s first NEWMAC tournament championships in the 2006-2007 after finishing in last place during the regular season. He was named the D3hoops.com Northeast Region Coach of the Year in 2007-2008.
