John begins his ninth season as the head coach of the swimming and diving program. He is the first swimming and diving coach for both the men and women at the Academy. He had led the men’s team to five NEWMAC Championship (1999, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2007) in eight years. He has been named NEWMAC Coach of the Year four times (2000-2001, 2003-2004, 2005-2006) and again last season.
Coach Westkott has coached 16 All-America and 10 All-America Honorable Mention athletes in his eight-year career at the Academy. The Coast Guard swimmers and divers have also had a NCAA Division III champion, two New England champions, and 54 NEWMAC champions since 1999. There have been numerous new school records established in that time as well.
Before joining the Academy, John served as an assistant coach for Springfield College from 1996-1999 where he earned his master’s degree in Physical Education. He also was an assistant coach with his father at the University of Rhode Island from 1994-1996, after graduating from URI in 1993 with degrees in English and History. John swam and played water polo at Rhode Island.
The men and women have combined for a record of 83-69 since 1999 in dual meet competition, with the women boasting their first winning season in 2002-2003. |
