Mike Shurgrue is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Coast Guard Academy men's rowing team.

Coach Shugrue began his rowing career at the East Lyme Rowing, sculled with the Thames River Sculls throughout the summer months and competed in The Royal Canadian Henley. In college he continued as a lightweight rower for Rutgers University in 2001 and graduated in 2005 having competed in several regattas including EARC Eastern Sprints and IRA Championship.

Mike returned to his alma mater in 2009 and began coaching at East Lyme as the assistant men's coach. He lead the Novice Men to consecutive metals in 2010 (2nd), and 2011 (3rd) place finishes at the Connecticut Public Schools Sprints Championship - their first since 2003.
