Sophomore Robert Turley, of the sailing team, has been named the
CGASPORTS.COM Athlete of the Week after finishing fifth in the
A-Division at the New England Championship at Yale University.
Coast Guard finished fourth overall and qualified for the College Sailing Coed National Championship, which will be their first appearance since 1995.
Turley has had many impressive finishes with various skippers at top events this season, including finishing 5th in B-Division at the Fall New England Championship, 2nd in B-Division at the St. Mary's Fall Interconference, 1st in C-Division at the Oberg Trophy, and 1st at the Admiral Moore Team Race. Turley will be a key player as the team trains for their first National Championship appearance in 20 years.
He and Avery Fanning finished in the top-5 of half of the
14 races this weekend. A-Division at the New England
Championship is very strong and competitive as they sailed against
multiple All-Americans from top-tier division 1 schools.
The New England Championship concludes the regular season for the Bears who will now turn their focus to the National Championship. After four weeks of training at home the team will hit the road to Maryland, first competing in the College Sailing Women's National Championship at the US Naval Academy on May 27-30 and then moving on to the College Sailing Coed National Championship at St. Mary's on June 3-6.
